Caroline Lewers, née Murrell, b. 1867 at Happy Valley, was a daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Prior to her marriage, Caroline Murrell assisted her mother to manage the Victoria Hotel in Linton. In 1910 she married William Ochiltree Lewers (son of Annie Lewers and Samuel Lewers). Caroline's sister-in-law Lily (Mary Lillian) Murrell, née Young, was born in Birmingham, England, and migrated to Australia with her father James Young when she was seven. In Australia James Young changed his name to Clarke and was known as James Young Clarke (Lily also used this surname). James Young Clarke moved with Lily to Linton, where he ran J Y Clarke's tobacconist and barber shop in Sussex Street. Lily Clarke married William Murrell, son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell, in 1901. They lived at Daylesford and other localities before returning to Linton in about 1912, when William Murrell took over management of the newsagency. Annie Meredith Nicholls, a daughter of William Henry Nicholls (1845-1902) and Annie Nicholls (nee Smith, 1847-1900) of Linton, worked for Mr. George Smith, who ran a stationery and newsagency shop at what is now 88 Sussex Street, Linton. When George Smith died in 1900, he left most of his estate, including the shop, to Annie Nicholls, then aged nineteen. Annie continued to run the shop and in 1903 she married George Brown, who was working at Mt Bute station at the time. They had seven children - Laurie, Victor, Ivy, Noelene, Annie, Ethel and Verna. In the early 1920s Annie became too unwell to run the shop, which was taken over by Walter and Katie Bonthorn and then by Ruby Sandow. William Murrell was a son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell, who ran the Victoria Hotel in Linton from about 1881. William lived in Daylesford for some years, but returned to live in Linton, where he ran the newsagency. His daughter Carrie Murrell assisted him and eventually took over the management of the newsagency. William Murrell married Lily Clarke (also known as Lily Young), the daughter of Jimmy Clarke (J.Y. In 1900 this shop was a stationer's and newsagency owned by George Smith. It was then owned by Annie Nicholls (afterwards Annie Brown), and later by Ruby and John Sandow. Their daughter Kitty married Reg Jennings and the shop became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". The shop evolved into a grocery/general store/confectioners. The photograph is dated to between 1927 and 1932, as the Nelson house has been renovated (this happened in 1927). Dan Cornish sold his shoe shop in 1932 (it became Murrell's newsagency). Black and white image which shows buildings in Sussex Street, Linton. The building in the foreground, the Linton Public Library, has a car parked in front of it. Other buildings are the house owned by the Nelson family, the Railway Hotel, Dan Cornish's shoe shop and the weighbridge. A gas lamp is attached to the verandah of the library building.
