Frank Cornell was first listed in Surrey Hills in 1906 at (6) Lorne Parade. In 1908 the listing gives his occupation as a clerk. He was born in 1869 in Richmond, Victoria and died 15 April 1917 in Surrey Hills from a stroke. His wife Blanche Annie Parsons Cornell (nee Bracher) was born in 1869 in Hokitika, New Zealand; she died on 21 January 1940. Children were: Gilbert Frank Cornell (b1894, Hawthorn; d1908, at Frankston beach, an accidental drowning) Ruth Amelia Cornell (b 1899, Kew; d 29 May 1977, Kew) Lorna Amy Cornell (b 1906, Surrey Hills; d unknown) Patience Blanche Cornell (b1907, Surrey Hills; d unknown). Ruth Amelia married David Ellis, c1922 in Surrey Hills. David was a dentist who practised in Surrey Hills for many years. Patience (Pat) Blanche married Norman Henry Brewer (1893–1975) in 1931 in Surrey Hills. Donor identification was that man in back row on left was Henry Beckett; 2nd from left was Emma Beckett, later Mrs John Gray. The Beckett family were important in the establishment of the Wesleyan / Methodist church in Surrey Hills and adjacent areas. Coimadai is a rural community located 10km north of Bacchus Marsh. The Coimadai School was opened in 1862. It was at first entirely funded by the local residents in the area. In these early years it was known as the Pyrete School after the nearby creek of that name. The building shown in this 1883 image was constructed in 1872 and replaced an earlier wooden structure. Over time the Coimadai School became a government funded and administered school. A famous pupil to attend the school was John Cain Senior, Premier of Victoria in the 1940s and 1950s, who attended the school for one year in 1893. Head teacher Mr Dugard, and teachers Annie Sandow, Mrs Johnston and George Sanderson are identified in an inscription on the back of the photograph. Photograph is dated by the inscription, which identifies the head teacher as "Mr Dugard". Mr A. Duguard was head teacher for only one term in 1914. Teacher Annie Sandow is named in the inscription on the back of the photo as "Mrs Cull" (Annie Sandow married George Cull in 1915). Happy Valley was originally called Lucky Woman's. The School opened under the name of Happy Valley in 1883, and the brick building probably dates from that time. Miles Barraclough was the head teacher from 1873 to 1887. When mining ceased the population declined and the land reverted to grazing. The School closed in 1940.
