Black and white photograph contained within Reg. Item 2488, page 55, of two ESCo Depot workers at the rear of the Wendouree Parade building. Has a handwritten caption by H.P. James. Featured in the photo are Alf Coulter and Arthur Thompson. Note Item Not formally Numbered. Image btm2507i2 shows position on page relative to items 2507 to 2512. High Res Images added 15/3/2011.Handwritten in Pencil under the photograph is "I can tell a story here to my liking. This is rear of Blacksmiths shop Tram Depot, Alf Coulter and Arthur Thompson with hammer. Now in the earlier years, the smithy Horse and early electric was against the Gregory St. frontage. I wielded the 12lb hammer to assist the then blacksmith, W. McGeachan? (red hair) 1905. I was sent to the horse trams to act as a temporary conductor but I stayed for some time as conductor, track cleaner and grooms assistant."tramways, trams, esco, blacksmith, depot

Two Newspaper clippings or Illustrations contained within Reg. Item 2488, page 81 showing two ESCo trams (one Californian combination and the other a Sebastopol tram) in Sturt St near Grenville St, with the original tramway shelter in the background and the other the mass photo of horse trams (See Reg. Item 2491) and hand written notes about the two photographs by H.P James. James notes the circumstances of the 2nd photo - taken to show the Directors of ESCo in Liverpool Ballarat and their tramway assets. The Second photo James says was taken c1923 (just) - prior to the removal of the shelter. Also provides notes on the colours of the tram route indicators and times of services. Document - Letter and Envelope, 1937

Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. Photocopy of a letter dated August 5, 1908, typed on ESCo letterhead to Mr. J. Lazarus Esq advising that he capably acted as Surveyor and Superintending Engineer for the construction of various sections of tramway track in Ballarat and thanking home for his work. Signed by E. James Beauchamp, Assistant Engineer and Manager. Accompanying the photocopy is a photocopy of a letter dated 17/3/1993 from Brian Robertson of 20 Main St Welshpool. Items from Mr. Lazarus had been left to him. Comments that Mr. Lazarus was a well known engineer in Ballarat prior to the first world war. Alice McGREGOR Born: 1908; unknown parents. Possibly adopted by the Salter family? Electoral Roll 1936: Highland Terrace Kangaroo Flat. Alice Mary Salter and William Robert Salter living together; presumed to be sister and brother. William Robert Salter was killed in a MVA in Bendigo in 1937 aged 26.
