Churchill Island Heritage FarmArtwork, other - Model Ship, Lady Nelson, 2016-17
The Lady Nelson was the first decked ship to enter Western Port at the beginning of 1801, captained by Lt James Grant, who named Churchill Island after a man in Dawlish, Devon who gave him a quantity of a variety of seeds, including wheat, which he sowed on CI. Lady Nelson returned at the end of the year under the command of Murray, who reported that most of the seeds had grown. He harvested the wheat to feed to the swans they had on board for fresh meat. Friends of Churchill Island Society commissioned the building of the model ship from David Lumsden, who built it for FOCIS for the cost of materials.See historical information for the significance of the Lady Nelson to Churchill Island.1:24 scale model of the Lady Nelson (c.1801) made from cardboard, wood, cord, string, wool. Family heirloom. Originated in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Came to Tasmania with the family of Thomas Johnstone, a blacksmith. He was not happy there and with the help of Joshua Black came to Portland, Victoria, opened a blacksmith business in the town and then took up a section at Swan Lake near Portland.No Churchill Island significance - suits the period of Amess HouseMantel clock placed traditionally above the fireplace. The bell came from the ship Netherby, which was wrecked on King Island. The full story of the bell's journey from King Island is unclear, but assumption is that Roadknight family may have transferred it from their property in the Western District to Gippsland. HMS J3 (later HMAS J3) was a J-class submarine operated by the Royal Navy and later the Royal Australian Navy. After the war, the British Admiralty decided that the best way to protect the Pacific region was with a force of submarines and cruisers. To this end, they offered the six surviving submarines of the J-class to the Royal Australian Navy as gifts. J1 and her sisters were commissioned into the RAN in April 1919, and sailed for Australia on 9 April, in the company of the cruisers Sydney and Brisbane, and the tender Platypus. The flotilla reached Thursday Island on 29 June, and Sydney on 10 July. Because of the submarines' condition after the long voyage, they were immediately taken out of service for refits. Apart from local exercises and a 1921 visit to Tasmania, the submarines saw little use, and by June 1922, the cost of maintaining the boats and deteriorating economic conditions saw the six submarines decommissioned and marked for disposal.The wreck of JR can still be seen off Swan Bay2 propellers from the J3 submarine 'HMAS Reaper'j3, j class submarines, hmas reaper -

... a base in Swan Island in Queenscliffe. HMS Nelson HMVS Nelson ...HMS Nelson was a 126-gun ship of the line of the Royal Navy. Launched on 4 July 1814 at Woolwich Dockyard she was later converted into a screw ship in 1860, and was cut down to a two-decker and fitted with an engine of 2,102 indicated horsepower. In 1865, HMVS Nelson was given to the colony of Victoria as a training ship. She was outfitted and rigged for £42,000 and sailed for Australia in October 1867. Travelling via the Cape of Good Hope, she arrived in February 1868.
