On that date the Victorian Division of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen was 114 years old, making it the oldest continuous railway union in the world. It was formed as the Locomotive Engine Drivers' Association in 1861- just 7 years after the first railway, Flinders Street, Melbourne to Sandridge (now Port Melbourne) was officially opened. ... The Grapevine Cuttings by Rob Upson - 'The Railway to ...Rob Upson became a volunteer at the Bendigo Visitor Centre in 1998. The Staff produced a monthly newsletter called ‘The Grapevine’. Being reasonably new to Bendigo, Rob became interested in its history and began writing articles to share with the volunteers. He called them ‘Grapevine Cuttings’ under the pen name of ‘Merlot’. Rob wrote about 90 articles over a period of 12 years until ‘The Grapevine’ was finally pruned and shutdown. The Burma-Thailand Death Railway Film Poster ...The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, the Siam–Burma Railway, the Thai–Burma Railway and similar names, was a 415-kilometre railway between Ban Pong, Thailand, and Thanbyuzayat, Burma, built by the Empire of Japan in 1943 to support its forces in the Burma campaign of World War II. This railway completed the rail link between Bangkok, Thailand, and Rangoon, Burma. This is a poster advertising the showing of a film on the making of the railway.In all, 9,500 Australian prisoners of war worked on the construction of the Burma-Thailand Railway, which ran from Bampong, Thailand, to Thanbyuzayat, Burma . Building commenced at each end of the railway.
