magazine, Aussie, March 18, 1918
Alexander Butters enlisted on 12 November 1914 as a gunner. He was awarded a Meritorious Service medal for his "determination and courage .....setting a splendid example to his men..." on the SOMME. 'Aussie' (1918- circa 1929) was a commercial magazine of opinion, review and entertainment. It was edited by Phillip Harris and published in France 1918 - 1919 on a small printing press that Harris brought with him to France. Initially the print run was only 10,000 copies, but soon it reached 60,000 and later 100,000. The magazine celebrated a distinctive 'Aussie' identity through language, humour and imagery. It distributed news, provided light-hearted ways of seeing the war experience and gave soldiers an outlet to express dissent or dissatisfaction. It also provided a voice for Australian authors such as Banjo Paterson, C.J. Dennis and Bernard O'Dowd. (Ref Museum Victoria)This magazine provides an Australian soldiers' view of the political and world climate during World War I, and also represents the bond between Australian soldiers. The magazine celebrated a distinctive ?Aussie? identity, through language, humour and their assertion of what it meant to be an Australian. It allowed news to be distributed, gave the soldiers an outlet to express any dissent or dissatisfaction, thus preventing any greater form of rebellion and promoted Australian authors like Banjo Paterson, C.J. Dennis and Bernard O'Dowd. (Ref. Museum Victoria)A thin black and white paper magazine called "Aussie". This is Volume 3. The magazine contains stories, illustrations, songs and poetry from the First World War. On the front cover the title is printed across the centre, with a drawing of a soldier in uniform standing sideways, and holding a gun. Four drawings within circles are positioned in each corner, joined by a wreath and ribbons bearing the names of the war fields. His head is in the shape of the map of Australia. poem, Mallacoota
The poem, "Mallacoota", as in this copy, does not appear to be noted in any of the lists of poems attributed to Henry Lawson. NOTE: Information provided by David Williams on 13/12/2021 is that "this poem in your collection is by Edward Harrington (indeed not Lawson)". Edward P Harrington (1895-1966) was born in Shepparton, served in Palestine in W W I with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, tried farming, but his lifelong passion was for story-telling through poetry. He is described as the 'last bush balladist' in Australia, and was a close friend of E J Brady and John Shaw Neilson. It was likely that he came to Mallacoota as a guest of E J Brady who had a camp for writers and poets there. He produced 5 collections of verse: Songs of War and Peace; Boundary Bend and Other Ballads; My Old Black Billy and other Songs of the Australian Outback; The Kerrigan Boys and other Australian Verses; and Swagless Swaggie and Other Ballads. His "Mallacoota" poem is printed in the Swagless Swaggie collection (1957). https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/harrington-edward-philip-10431 Poetry associated with a place in East Gippsland. A copy of a printed poem titled "Mallacoota" with unknown author. It is pasted onto a cardboard backing. Although attributed to Henry Lawson in this printed copy, information is that it is by Edward Harrington.poem - edward harrington - bush balladist - mallacoota -

Book, The Rambler, 1942
These two items were sent in the 1940s to Tom Terrington of Framlingham ( about 28 kilometres north east of Warrnambool) from Donald Mackintosh. Tom Terrington (b. 1897) worked at various jobs until he took over the Framlingham store in the 1940s. He was a scholarly person with a wide knowledge of English literature. He wrote poetry and researched and wrote extensively on Framlingham history. Donald Mackintosh (1866-1951) was Australia’s first Olympic shooting gold medallist. He competed in trapshooting events all over the world, winning 30 gold medals, making a considerable amount of money and holding the world trapshooting championship title from 1903 to 1908. He was a keen photographer and wrote poetry under the name of ‘The Rambler’. This small folder is of great interest as it contains a poem sent to Tom Terrington by Donald Mackintosh (The Rambler). Tom Terrington is important in Framlingham’s history and his friendship with Donald Mackintosh, an Australian and world trapshooting champion and a poet is of considerable interest. The tone of the poem echoes also the despondency felt by Australians during the darkest days of World War Two. This is a piece of cream thickened paper folded in two with a typed copy of a poem pasted on the inside of the paper and a copy of a prose piece typed in ornate script and pasted on to a piece of cardboard and enclosed in the cream folder. Both of the typed items have handwritten messages at the bottom of the text. The cream folder is a little crumpled and stained. ‘The Rambler 1942-3’ ‘For T. Book, Picador classic, All quiet on the western front, 1929
A full-cast dramatisation of one of the greatest war novels of all time. First published as a novel in 1929, it tells the story of a group of young German soldiers who are enduring, and then coming to terms with, the realities of the First World War. At the age of 19, following the outbreak of the First World War, Paul Bäumer enlists in the German Army. He is deployed to the Western Front, where the experience of life and death in the trenches has an enormous effect on him. He begins to feel disconnected from his past life: his family, his love of poetry, and his feelings. Journal - Newsletter, The Interview. Official Organ of the Melbourne Inter Legacy Club, 1933
A copy of a newsletter published by the Intermediate Legacy Club (ILC) from 1933. It included news, poetry and president report by Len Frazer. Len was later the first Junior Legatee accepted into Melbourne Legacy after serving in the second world war. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. Photograph, The Shrine of Remembrance, 1995
Wooden crosses were installed in the grass verge of the Shrine in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was called the Field of Remembrance. These photos show some of the crosses, and with The Shrine in the background. The Field of Remembrance was publicised in editions of the Answer and featured on the cover of the October 1995 edition. The field of crosses was part of "Australia Remembers 1945 -1995". Crosses were available without charge (but by donation) at kiosk near the Shrine and names and unit numbers could be added and the cross placed in the Shrine grounds. The crosses were later gathered and burnt with the ashes being scattered on 11th November 1995. In the April 1997 edition of The Answer a poem was published that was written about the crosses. Patricia Fanke was awarded first prize in the Poetry section, Writing and Art Program run by the Department of Veterans' Affairs in September 1996.The 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II was a significant milestone marked in many ways by Legacy and the wider community.Colour photo x 3 of wooden crosses at The Shrine.Printed on the back " -

This book is an anthology of poetry written by over 80 migrants who settled in the North East of Victoria. It is a moving evocation of the migrant experience. Many of these migrants had been housed at the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre near Wodonga which began receiving migrants in 1947, Bonegilla became the largest and longest operating reception centre in the post-war era. More than 300,000 migrants passed through its doors between 1947 and 1971. Most of these migrants came from non-English speaking European families escaping their war-torn homelands. Their world had been turned upside down. Many were confused, unsure of where they were going or what the future held for them. Poem, Framed, Avis Quarrell, Night at Mersa Matruh, C 2016
... battalion poetry quarrell world war two second world war tom meagher ...This poem references Mersa Matruh, a port town on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt where Tom Meagher of the 14th Battalion may have served. Mersa Matruh was the backdrop for a series of battles between the German and British forces from mid- to late-1942.This poem was written by Avis Quarrell, an active community member of the Warrnambool RSL. Avis Quarrell was a former driver during the Second World War and is well known as a photographer and author in the Warrnambool area. The poem is well provenanced, bearing a dedication from the author herself and has significant interpretive capacity to discuss the North African campaigns, experiences of war and the history of the 14th Battalion when paired with the sketch.Poem printed in black ink on marled biege coloured paper in serif font, centred on page and signed by hand. Frame comprises of black plastic and is suspended by a wire on the reverse, which is screwed in on both the left and right hand sides. Poem is sealed in frame by framing tape, brown in colour. A gold adhesive label in the lower left hand corner indicates the framer and an inscription printed on paper is adhered onto the back of the frame.Underneath poem on front: “Avis Quarrell. C 2016.” On reverse, gold adhesive label reads: “Henna Street Picture Framers/74 Henna Street, Warrnambool/Ph/Fax (03) 5561 4795/ABN 88160473014” Printed inscription on reverse reads: “Warrnambool R.S.L./Please accept this Mersa Matruh sketch and poem/from Avis Quarrell and family (Anne and Murray/ Coverdale, Stephan and Jenny Quarrell, David/ and Janet Quarrell.)/Tom Meagher was a member of the 14th Battalion/in World War 2 and gave this to my husband while/ they were in North Africa./I wrote the poem because of the poignancy it/ created in my heart./We give this on the 100 Anniversary of the/ Warrnambool Sub-Branch, 26th of April, 2016 (16 crossed out and replaced with a 17).”north africa, mersa matruh, 14th battalion, poetry, quarrell, world war two, second world war, tom meagher -
