Ruby Sandow ran a general store and confectionary business there in the 1930s and 1940s, while living at the premises with her husband John and their daughter Catherine (known as Kitty).Coloured photocopy of document which certifies that fire insurance policy no. 13996325 has been renewed from 17/7/1937 to 17/7/1938, for buildings in Sussex Street Linton consisting of "Dwelling, General Store & Wash-house". Insured are Mrs. R.N. Sandow and Mr. E. Doepel, mortgagee. Premium paid was one pound, twelve shillings and eight pence. Shops on the left of the picture are: saddler (probably O'Sullivan at this time), butcher (probably G G Bennett), baker's shop (Nicol?), shop with verandah (originally 'Ellington House' owned by T M Wise), Preston's shop (with verandah, on corner of Sussex & Gillespie Streets), and Wishart's blacksmiths (on the far side of Gillespie Street). On the right, the buildings are E H Nicholls ("cheap grocer and seedsman"), the Surface Hill Hotel, Richard Ching's store and dwelling (grocer & produce merchant), and another shop without verandah (probably shop and dwelling owned by Annie Brown, née Nicholls).Original black and white photograph affixed to white backing paper which has then been mounted on grey card. From the early 'Index of Photographs' held at LDHS: "This tiny cottage, more like a dolls house, now stands behind Murrells newsagency in Linton. It stood at one time down near the entrance to the Recreation Reserve but was moved up to its present site when Dan Cornish carried on his boot and shoe store and repairs. Murrells later purchased the premises." Certificate of Title for 75 Sussex Street shows that Dan Cornish became the proprietor of this property in 1890. The white corner building was formerly a fruit and vegetable shop which was run by various generations of the Preston family, the last of whom was George Preston. The shop closed in the 1970s and this photo taken in 1988 shows it without its original verandah. The Morgan family ran a store in Sussex Street from 1894, known as the Linton Economic Store. It was run between c.1906 and 1930 by J.H. (John Hutchison) Morgan, between 1930 and 1956 by R.H. (Robert Harold) Morgan, and between 1956 and 1964 by S.E. (Selwyn Eric) Morgan. Alwyn Roberts worked at the store from about 1946. See information in Charles & Alwyn Roberts family file.
