A feature of Agricultural Shows was military sports. Following World War One, the 8th (Indi) Light Horse was raised in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. Medal - Antique Aeroplane Association Wodonga Medallion, 1982
This medallion was produced to commemorate the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's annual air show which was held at Wodonga. It took place at Joe Drage's Air World Museum in Wodonga, Victoria. The event included a fly-in by members of the Antique Aeroplane Association which attracted vintage planes from all parts of Australia. This medallion and 2 other linked medallions were owned by Mr. Clive Cossor. He spent a lot of time at Drage's Historical Aircraft Museum and also helped transport gliders. He was also at the Albury racecourse as a teenager to assist in moving the Uiver when it was forced to land in a storm during the MacRobertson Trophy Air Race from London to Melbourne in October 1934.This medallion is significant as it records an important event recognising aviation in Australia.A medallion produced to commemorate the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's annual air show held at Wodonga. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport. “Albury Express” on broad gauge flanked by “Spirit of Progress” on standard gauge. Medal - Antique Aeroplane Association Wodonga Air Show Medallion, 1981
This medallion was produced to commemorate the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's annual air show which was held at Wodonga in 1981. It took place at Joe Drage's Air World Museum in Wodonga, Victoria. It recognised the 50th anniversary of the manufacture of the first De Haviland 82 Tiger Moth in 1931. This medallion and 2 other linked medallions were owned by Mr. Clive Cossor. He spent a lot of time at Drage's Historical Aircraft Museum and also helped transport gliders. This medallion was produced to commemorate the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's fourth annual air show which was held at Wodonga on June 14 and 15, 1980. It took place at Joe Drage's Air World Museum in Wodonga, Victoria. The event included a fly-in by members of the Antique Aeroplane Association which attracted 105 vintage planes from all parts of Australia. The show incorporated the Amy Johnson memorial rally to recognise the 50th anniversary of Amy Johnson's flight from England to Australia in 1930. Radio 2AY, the sponsor of the annual air show began broadcasting in 1930. This medallion and 2 other linked medallions were owned by Mr. Clive Cossor. He spent a lot of time at Drage's Historical Aircraft Museum and also helped transport gliders. Badge - Membership Albury S.S & A, Perfection Badges, 1980 - 1981
The Albury Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen’s Club traces its origins back to the Albury and District War Services Hall Appeal Committee. This group of the World War I diggers, service groups and parents of men serving in World War II set out to raise 14,000 pounds for a Services Memorial Hall. After the war ended, the Memorial Hall Fund was far short of its target. Also, different attitudes prevailed when the boys came home. Instead of a memorial hall, the idea of a licensed club gained favour. This was to be not merely for RSL men who had served overseas, but for many ex-servicemen who had not left Australia. Using the Memorial Hall Fund, the RSL bought the old Commercial Club buildings at 611 Dean Street, which had been a Service Rest Room throughout the war and up to February 1946. The SS&A Club was formally opened in October 1946 and was registered under the Liquor Act in 1947. The foundation stone of the new building in Olive Street was laid by Lt General Sir John Northcott, May 2, 1959. The building was opened July 15,1960 by Governor of NSW, Sir Eric Woodward. It has since undergone many extensions and developments to become a modern facility but still continues to honour its origins with the inclusion of its War MemorialThis badge is representative of the role played by licensed clubs in the local community.Enamelled membership badges for the S.S & A. Dr. Barnett and the "Irish Tiger" was an in-house and travelling exhibition of the Albury Regional Museum. The in-house exhibition took place from 14 December 1985 until 30 June 1986. The travelling exhibition were available for three to six week periods between July 1986 and July 1987. Museums, galleries, schools and libraries could apply to host the exhibition. The Albury Amateur Dramatic Club was formed in 1859. In December that year, they staged a production of "Two Heads are Better Than One", and the "Irish Tiger" at the Theatre Royal which was attached to the Imperial Hotel in Townsend Street, Albury to raise money for the building fund for a Mechanics Theatre Dr Joseph Knight Barnett was Involved in the formation of the Dramatic Club and was stage manager for these productions. Other topics in the exhibition included Historic Pipe Organs, Town Bands of Albury and Wodonga, and Concert Halls, Theatres and Schools of Music and Drama.A small booklet issued as the program for an exhibition celebrating 130 years of music and theatre in Albury Wodonga. He was based at Ararat for some time, then transferred to Dimboola in 1926. In November 1937 when the “Spirit of Progress” made its first run from Melbourne to Albury, he was moved to Wodonga. From the train's first return trip he took over the driving. During his career, he made an average of 92 round trips a year. George made his last trip on 4 February 1955 prior to his retirement. George died in Wodonga on 19 February 1967. The son of a railway man, George grew up in St Arnaud near the railway line. He watched the engines go by and dreamed of being an engine driver. He started working as a cleaner in 1907. Through hard work and further study, George worked his way up to become a locomotive driver. He moved to Wodonga in 1917. At the Victorian Railways Institute examinations, George won four gold medals for Engine Working and Westinghouse Brake In 1925 he was appointed as an Instructor. George was one of four senior drivers who in rotation drove the Sydney Limited. The other drivers were Ray Murphy, F. Hobbs and George Padgett. They all lived with their families in Wodonga. George drove the first Spirit of Progress from Spencer Street to Albury. He made railway history in 1937 when the Sydney Ltd ran non-stop from Albury to Spencer Street in 3 hrs. 25 mins, clipping 25 minutes off the previous record. As part of the Bicentennial celebrations locomotives began to arrive in Melbourne for the AusSteam 88 exhibition from 14 October. A planned parallel run south of Seymour with NSW locomotives 3112 and 1210 and Victorian Railways J515 had to be abandoned due to late running by the NSW locomotives. A parallel run did take place on Sunday 16 October when VR R761 and NSW 3801 ran from Wodonga to Melbourne. On 25 October 1988, the Flying Scotsman worked its first passenger trip in Australia when it took a return Melbourne to Albury journey. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. George James McFarlane was born on 19 August 1895 in Wodonga, Victoria. He was the youngest son of Charles John McFarlane and Emily Charlotte nee Ellis. He married Margaret Frances Kirley in Wodonga in 1918 and they had 6 children. George kept this diary for most of 1927. It documents his daily life and some local events. George worked part time with the local blacksmith and then on his own farm before and after work. He was later to take over the blacksmith himself, operating as a blacksmith and farrier from premises in High Street, Wodonga. George's diary documents his daily dedication to other jobs on the farm including trapping and shooting vermin such as rabbits and foxes, growing watermelon and vegetables and training horses. He also became a member of the Albury Coursing Club. In his later years, George moved to Euroa and then fo the Northcote and Broadmeadows area of Melbourne where he died in 1968.A small diary with cardboard cover including volume and publisher details within a border. A red and white retailer sticker has been adhered to the front cover. The diary includes a calendar for 1927 and 37 pages of information including postal, money order and telegraphic information, British weights and measures and Directions for Making a will. The remainder of the diary is divided into 3 days per page. This utility truck was one of two used by the Albury Gas Co, from the Gas Works in Kiewa Street, Albury to service the coal gas supply system in Albury during the war years from 1939-1945. The gas bags were installed as petrol was in short supply. One of the trucks was driven by John (Jack) Stanley Cruickshank, also known as Wodonga's Gas Man. Jack became foreman for the Wodonga Branch of the Albury Gas Co. An 80 millimetre galvanised steel pipeline was installed from the Albury Gas Co. in Kiewa Street, Albury, to 26 Church Street, Wodonga. A 40 horsepower pump pushed the gas to holding tanks. Sections of the gas pipeline to Wodonga can still be observed under some of the bridges from Albury to Wodonga. Jack also supervised the laying of the gas pipes in the streets of Wodonga, being hand dug by a gang of 15- 20 men. He was Wodonga's first Gas Fitter, both fitting gas appliances and overseeing their maintenance. The locomotive was G516. Driver Tom Symonds was based in Wodonga from 1955 to 1987. He served as AFULE Branch Secretary from 1962 to 1963 and 1966 to 1971. G Class Locomotives - G Class locomotives were primarily intended for hauling freight services, they were also used on passenger trains such as the “Southern Aurora” and the “Intercapital Daylight”. Locomotive G516 came into service in December 1984. After a series of contractual changeovers between companies it was transferred to QR National and is still in operation, The "Southern Aurora", the overnight Sydney-Melbourne express, was one of the icons of Australian railways in the 1960s and 1970s. Uniquely in Australia, it conveyed only First Class passengers, all of whom were accommodated in air-conditioned sleeping cars, all equipped with showers. The Southern Aurora was introduced when part of Australia's rail gauge problem was solved with the construction of a new standard gauge line. The new line was a 317 km long line running from Albury, NSW, parallel to the existing broad gauge line to Melbourne, connecting Australia's two largest cities by standard gauge. The Southern Aurora consisted of 14 stainless steel cars: a luggage van, a power van, a dining car, a lounge car, and ten First Class Sleeping Cars. The total capacity was 198 passengers. For a number of years, there were no intermediate stops for passengers, and the train had the longest non-stop run in Australia, 430 km from Goulburn to Albury. Dining car crews changed at Goulburn and Albury, and locos were changed at Albury. The first train ran from Sydney on Thursday 14th April 1962, with full regular services starting from both Sydney and Melbourne on Monday 16th April 1962. The classic S Class locomotive was used to haul the early Southern Aurora trains. From 1984 it was also hauled by the new G Class locomotives, On the morning of 7th February 1969, the southbound Southern Aurora collided head-on with a northbound goods near Violet Town, Victoria. Nine passengers and crew were killed, and seven carriages were destroyed. A steady decline in patronage saw the withdrawal of the service in August 1986. At top of locomotive "G516". Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.Wodonga, High Street West Businesses including Gas company, ESANDA, State Bank of Victoria, Toyworld, Medicare, Black Orchid Gift and Hostess Store, and the Royal Bank. The State Bank of Victoria was taken over by the Commonwealth Bank in 1990. The Medicare service was removed from Wodonga in 2015 and amalgamated with the Albury Service Centre. Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.S.E.C.; Wodonga Sports Store, Wodonga Delicatessen, Marks Bros. Butchery; Halls Bakery. Before Marks Brothers, the butcher Bert Wilcox Butchery. Ron and Anne Chaffey ran the Wodonga Delicatessen from 1983 to 1986 and Marks brothers owned the building. Hall’s Modern Bakery was established in 1930 and was selling Sunicrust Bread. The bakery operated for 48 years. In 1960, Bob Hall and four Albury bakers, Eric Wynne and Allan, Neville and Keith Thiel, joined Bunge’s Albury Flour Mills in forming a new company, Southern Border Bakeries. He became a director and general manager of the company. He also served 9 years in local government. Bob was also a member of the Bread Manufacturers Council of N.S.W., the Australian and New Zealand Bread Manufacturers Association, and an employers representative on the N.S.W. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga.
