The Eltham Apex Club conducted a Community Service Project (1965-1968) to raise funds for a new Ambulance Station to service the community. A site bounded by the intersection of Main Road, Grand Boulevard and Looker Road at Montmorency was purchased in 1969. In 1970, Eltham Shire Council undertook roadworks to construct Apex Way in preparation for the new station as well as duplicate Main Road, Lower Plenty, east of Grand Boulevard including the new Lower Plenty Bridge, which had been opened in November 1966, bordering with the City of Heidelberg. The Eltham Ambulance Station was opened 4 May 1975 by the Hon. Roy M. Vale, M.L.A. It was demolished in November 2017 to make way for a new larger station which also houses a MICA unit, opened 29 August 2018 by the Hon. The Victorian Civil Ambulance had a fleet of 40 of these ambulances which were sturdy and tough vehicles. This vehicle was in service at Davenport, Tasmania till 1970. The Sate Emergency Service then used the vehicle for a further three years before it was retired. The Ambulance Historical Society of Victoria purchased the vehicle in 2006. Significant, one of the earliest details of the Red Cross Society in WW1 Very significant, very rare.Paper poster, headed Red Cross Society. Asking for interested citizen in the Camberwell/Canterbury area to form committees to raise 600 pounds to buy a fitted out Motor Ambulance to send over to France as part of the war effort. In October 1914 not one motor Ambulance was on the French front as the War office had banned any Red Cross involvement with wounded soldiers. Once General Kitchener was made aware of this situation he immediately overruled the ban and 100 motor ambulances and 1000 Nurses were sent to France. This fund raising by Camberwell Residents for a Motor Ambulance to be sent to France would have been among the first in WW1.See photo for complete details
