In 1920 Michael Taffe was awarded Junior Cornet Solo Champion at Ballarat's South St competitions, The Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia. This competition was the premier band contest in Australia with musicians from every state and New Zealand taking part. The large framed studio portrait of Michael together with his cornet and medals was on display in the window of Allan's Music store Melbourne when the building was severely damaged by fire but these items were saved. Part of a large family collection of local & family history items at Hymettus Cottage, home to the same Ballarat family for the past 125. This portrait has a well documented provenance and a known owner and has hung in this historic house for the past 102 years. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection that reflects Ballarat's local history from a family perspective. This small programme is for the Solo & Party Championships, incorporating a C & D Grade band contest conducted by the Heidelberg Eisteddfod Society under the patronage of the Victorian Bands' League. This part of the Eisteddfod was held from October 3rd - October 10th 1952. The program details lists of names of bands people and the instruments they played as well as numerous C & D grade bands that participated. Quite a number of the junior musicians were part of famous school and youth bands of the time. This Eisteddfod program is significant as it details a typical suburban Eisteddfod competition which included brass bands and brass musicians. The lists of names are also significant as they indicate which bands people had their start during this time and which bands they were part of. Bob Pattie of the Ballarat Brass Band believes the Ballarat City Band with Frank Wright as Conductor travelled to Queensland to take part in a contest up there. This is supposed to be the very first time that a Victorian Band had gone to Queensland to take part in a contest. "Frank Wright is actually marching with his band. That's him near the side drummer. The Malvern Tramways Band (Stonnington City Brass) was one of the leading brass bands in Victoria and Australia for many years. The conductor, Mr Harry Shugg, arrived to conduct the band in 1915 having previously been conductor of the Geelong Harbour Trust Band. Harry Shugg went on to conduct the band for an amazing 31 years where they won numerous competitions.This postcard is significant as it presents an photo of a very famous band and their conductor.
