These pennants were introduced by Sunshine High School around 1959 in an attempt to instil among the students, a greater pride for the school. This particular pennant was hung for many years on the bedroom wall of the original student who bought it. It was later in the possession of a younger sibling who commenced going to Sunshine High School 19 years after the original student.Sunshine High School existed in its own right for a relatively short time from 1955 to 1991. The school buildings now form part of the Sunshine Campus of Victoria University. This pennant is one of the few items in our possession which serve as a reminder that Sunshine High School was once part of the secondary education system in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.Triangular shaped pennant made mainly from maroon coloured felt material, with yellow felt material used to make an edging stripe and two suspension loops along the short side of the triangle. By the late 1950s Robin Boyd had developed a network of connections in the United States, and a reputation there as an important architectural critic. In 1960 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the American Institute of Architects. This certificate was put on display in Penleigh's bedroom by the Robin Boyd Foundation. This certificate is dated April 19, 1960, the day earlier than another certificate at Walsh Street (item D491). Photos from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The photos shows three rooms of Stanhope, the study room and two bedrooms. They may be copies printed from slides (see 02520-02522). The photo of the study room is surrounded by the names: Denise Attewell, Susan Knowles, June S., Jill Baker, Colleen, Jacky and Sandra. One bedroom photo is captioned 'Packing for the holidays' and has the names: Lynn Hall, Jacky Mooney? and Jane Reed. The other photo has the names: June S, Glenyce Ring and Jennifer Biggs. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. A newspaper clipping at 01823 mentions the routine of the house including that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equiped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member attended for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year they have informal dances at Stanhope. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. These pins were awarded at Koko between 1967 -1969. Two pins were awarded to guests at Koki each week for "'outstanding displays of eccentric or unusual behaviour" during their stay. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This item is significant because it represents entertainment and activities at Koki Lodge in the late 1960s.Koki enamelled metal pins depicting the sun wearing glasses. The pin is accompanied by a typed sign.On Sign ITEM No.68 Koki pins 1967 to 1969 The Koki pin was never sold, and was only presented as the result of some very biased decision making. Unique award presentation ceremonies were conducted and two pins per week were awarded to guests for 'outstanding displays of eccentric or unusual behaviour during their stay at Koki. Pins could be earned on the slopes, at the bar, or in the bedroom. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents proposals put forward by Bob Hymans to develop facilities in the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A brief note to the Management Committee accompanying plans to extend the chalet. This patchwork quilt or bedspread is a modern creation along the lines of the traditional 1800s handmade English paper piecing patchwork quilting craft. It is made from reproduction fabric and quilt designs and represents the bed linen typical of a late 19th-century bedroom. Years ago, patchwork was a form of recycling, where leftover or previously used pieces of fabric were used to create other useful item such as quilts, rugs, cushion covers and jackets. Special projects were sometimes made with fabrics representing special memories, such as pieces from baby clothes, wedding gowns, and school uniforms. The maker would use a cardboard template shaped like a hexagon, place it onto the fabric and trace around it. Often the cardboard was cut from a box such as a cereal box. Women would gather to work on their patchwork while enjoying their social time together. As in the case of this quilt, members of the South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild in Warrnambool worked on the project, designing and quilting as a group to achieve their aim, of presenting the quilt to the recently opened Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. It was the first Group Project of the Branch which was formed in 1974. In 1975 the members decided to make a Quilt as a project to promote the formation of friendship and togetherness. Under the foundation Treasurer, Rita Williams, members sourced their own fabrics for the 'flowers' which were then stitched into the calico borders. Provision was made for the quilt to be hung for display, with the addition of loops along one edge. The local disability services employees and members cut out octagonal paper batches and used their own fabrics to piece them together. The Branch's first exhibition raised funds for buying fabric and equipment to assemble the patchwork. The quilt was perfectly suited to dress the bed in the Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage. This carefully created and designed, recently made patchwork bedspread typifies bedding and handcraft of the late 19th century. The English paper patchwork technique was used. The quilt was the first community project of the South Western Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild of Victoria, and presented as an addition to the Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage tat Flagstaff Hill. Patchwork quilt or bedspread, double bed size, made from hundreds of hexagonal-shaped fabric of various colours and patterns, carefully stitched onto a white background. It was made using the English paper patchwork technique. One edge of the quilt has loops dispersed at regular intervals. This would allow the quit to be used as a wall hanging. It was handmade by the South Western Branch of The Embroiders Guild, Victoria, and presented to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village in 1976.
