The photos were taken over approx. 3/5 months during mine and bomb clearance in the Darwin area, 1946-47. The photos were supplied by C. C. Parish RAN No.32690 who worked on the clearance. On the 19 February 1942, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town of Darwin, ships in the harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasion of Timor and Java during World War II. Darwin was lightly defended, relative to the size of the attack, and the Japanese inflicted heavy losses upon Allied forces at little cost to themselves. The two Japanese air raids were the first, and largest, of more than 100 air raids against Australia during 1942–43.The Bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. The urban areas of Darwin also suffered damage from the raids and there were a number of civilian casualties. Part of a navigator's training was to practice bomb aiming. These bombs detonated a liquid causing a thin spiral of smoke to rise from the impact point. Thousands were dropped near Nhill.At the end of WWII thousands of the remains of these bombs were removed for recycling. This was the main target used for bombing and strafing practice during WWII by trainees at the RAAF Air School at Nhill.Original target from the bombing range. Other temporary wooden targets were used but this is the only original target that now exists.This target is made of 10mm steel plate. Two circles approximately 1.5 metres in diameter are slotted and joined at right angles so that when viewed from a distance would always appear as a round ball. The 11 Pound Practice Bomb was used in Australia to train air crews both during and after WW2. When the bomb hit the ground it produced a smoke cloud so that the aircrew could see where their bomb had landed. There was only a small explosive charge in them. Cylindrical, finned steel bomb weighing approx. 11lb painted silver with three stripes (blue, yellow, red) painted around the mid-section. One attachment point/loop. Cast iron nose. None.
