The dollar in those days was worth approximately 4 shillings and 2 pence each. French, Spanish and Dutch etc coins were all exchanged, and cheques were cashed after banking hours at a moderate charge. It mentions the last day of school for the year when the pupils assembled in the grounds and sang a song composed by the headmaster. The headmaster stood in the school tower. Originally a parish church, St Paul's became a cathedral in 1981 when Bendigo was declared a separate diocese. The church, designed by Robert A Love, was dedicated in 1868, with the bells being added in 1873 and the organ in 1883. The Sutton grange Congregational Church was built in 1865. Original services were held in the home of Mr James Grey who served the church for 50 years. The Bendigo Congregational church originally operated out of the Mechanics Institue building before moving temporarily to the Church of England school room. In May 1858, a meeting was held to establish a permanent building and tenders were called in September 1858. Proposed Programme for Alexandra Fountain Centenary Celebrations 5th July 1981. Town Clerk's Report to the Ordinary Meeting of Council 4th May 1981 re proposed activities of a centenary celebration.
