There were 7 camps in the area during World War II which held about 4,000-8,000 people at any one time. 3 camps housed Prisoners Of War who were enemy servicemen captured in various theatres of war around the world and transported to Australia for the duration of the war. The remaining 4 camps held Internees who were civilians living in Australia or other Allied territories and countries at the outbreak of war and were deemed to be a security risk because of their nationality. Darwin was bombed by Japanese fighter bombers from Feb 1942 until Nov 1943. On 19 February 1942 Darwin itself was bombed. Japanese fighters and bombers attacked the port and shipping in the harbour twice during the day, killing 252 Allied service personnel and civilians. On 3 March Broome, in Western Australia, was strafed. In succeeding months air attacks were made on many towns in northern Australia including Wyndham, Port Hedland and Derby in Western Australia, Darwin and Katherine in the Northern Territory, Townsville and Mossman in Queensland, and Horn Island in the Torres Strait. Despite popular fears these raids were not the precursor to an invasion but they did serve to interrupt the use of Darwin's port facilities. The raids also tied up anti aircraft defences and air force units that would have otherwise been sent to more forward areas. In May 1940 the Australian Government launched its Savings Certificates scheme which encouraged civilians to invest in the national war effort. Organisers of the savings campaign targeted Melbourne's suburbs individually with the aim of enlisting street savings groups. Each street group had a volunteer secretary who regularly sold war savings certificates to, and collected money from, other residents. The Jacket belonged to Dennis James Powell, enlisted on 7.5.1941 No VX55199. Was a POW, discharged on 21.12.1945 in 2/29th Bn. Served Korea in the 3rd Bn No 32729 from 27.5.1951 - 14.8.1951, 24.9.51 - 22.4.1952. The service ribbons on the jacket are; 1939 - 45 Star Pacific Star British War Medal Australian Service Medal Korea Medal Un Medal Korea. The pants have posssibly been used to make up a uniform. 1. This is a black woollen jacket. It has 4 front pockets. It has Sgt's stripes on arm (Gold). It has RA Inf buttons. On the collars are another pattern RA Inf button - Kings Crown.
