A newspaper article about a protest by War Widows published 3 July 1947. An article showing more than 1500 people met to demand higher compensation for the loss of their husbands who had died for their country. Mrs J M Vasey received an ovation for her address to the meeting. She was the wife of Major-General Vasey, during the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. This reproduction on display board may have been for an exhibition of Guild memorabilia at some time. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this board, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. A gift from Shipwright Laurie DilksIn 1965 the current wheelhouse was built on the Plover. While fixing a leak in the starboard window we found an inscription “This wheelhouse was built by C. Barnard and L. Dilks”. Laurie Dilks has been a wonderful source of information about Plover’s time with Ports and Harbours. The photos attached are from his personal collection. Around the same time, the bulwarks on the bow of the vessel were also built. The Plover was the first AWB to be enhanced. Turkish Model 1893 Mauser Rifle, based on the German Gewehr 98 infantry rifle. Stamped on receiver is Turkish crest / AS.FA / ANKARA / 1935 (ASFA is basically Turkish Arms Factory). Various Turkish and importer markings may be found scattered over the rifle. Many Imported by Century Arms International and so marked on the barrel muzzle on this example. Internal staggered box magazine, 5 rounds, 7.92 x 57 mm (8mm) Mauser caliber. The event was held in the West Riding Hall, Henry Petrie Community Centre, Montmorency. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Kew Festival was initiated in 1974 by Cr Gerry Petrie. At each festival, members of the Society would display items, typically from the collection. Typically, exhibitions were themed. While they were mostly held at what was to become known as the Phyllis Hore Room of the Kew Library, some exhibitions were held in the Kew Civic Offices or Kew Civic Hall (from1987 Kew Library).Illustrations of churches and their congregations in Kew attached to a display board. The vineyards exhibition was mounted by the Sunbury & District Heritage Association in the former George Evans Museum from August 1996 to January 1997. It featured the establishment of the vineyards and the wine industry in Sunbury from the 1860s to the present day. From the early days of European settlement in Sunbury, it was found that the soils and climate suited the growing of grapes, especially the east facing slopes along Vineyard Road. A number of people of German origin established vineyards along there. By the end of the nineteenth century and limited spending power as a result of the 1890s depression, the demand for wine declined in Victoria with beer being the preferred beverage.While Phylloxera destroyed the vines in many areas of Victoria, Sunbury's grapevines were not affected. Display board was once property of Port Macquarie Historical Society & Museum, but they de-accessioned it in 2016 before donating it to the National Wool Museum. Reason for de-accession was that it no longer fit with their collection aims, nor was it relevant to their location. Item appears to have been made in 1963, or at least using wool samples from 1963. Warrant Officer Henry Whitty, a native of Tocumwal, enlisted at Cobram 2/1/1915 and was allocated to 13th Light Horse Regiment with Regt No 509. In France he was seconded to HQ 2nd Division and later transferred to Anzac Provost Corps with the Regt No 71. He was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1918 and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1919. Skippy St Elmo - Champion Skier and High Country Housewife. For much of the winter 1945 newly married Skippy St Elmo was alone in Wallace's Hut while her husband Toni worked as an assistant hydrographical observer for the SEC. During her first two weeks Skippy had her first ski lesson and promised herself that someday she would be able to ski. Before winter's end she was accompanying Toni around the snow gauges. The following year, Skippy and Toni became the first full time residents of Falls Creek. Along with a group of other SEC workers they built the first lodge at Falls Creek, “Skyline” in 1947. Not only did Skippy fulfill her promise to be able to ski but also went on to become the Victorian Women's 1949 Downhill & Combined Champion and in 1954 won the Albury Ski Club Men's championship. While modest about her skiing success, Skippy was very proud of her domestic skills and cooking prowess using a camp oven. She also was spent time sewing ski wear for both Toni and herself. The two men are Alan McKenzie and Trevor Dunn, who are cousins and long-time residents of the Sunbury - Bulla area.
