Collection of Margaret ScarlettThis doll was made by the Erich Dittman Company of Godesberg Mehlem, Germany. The company produced a line of small celluloid plastic dolls called Edi-puppets) between 1948 - 1960. The dolls were typically sold in costume though this one doesn't have original clothes. This doll was probably produced in about 1948-49. It is marked Edi 5/8 GERMANY. They produced girl and boy dolls.Small celluloid doll. Curly hair with blue shoes. Red and white skirt with tulle over skirt. Blue eyes with painted red lips and eyebrows. On the back of the doll are inscribed Edi 5/8 GERMANYEdi 5/8 GERMANYtoys, dolls

This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. This doll was given to Nancy Turner (born 22/12/1911) for her 3rd birthday. The clothes were handmade by her mother Mrs Beatrice Turner. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics ever created. It is made from wood products that include cellulose nitrate and camphor. First created in 1863, it was a popular material to make items as diverse as jewellery and dolls from the 1870s through the 1930s. Celluloid is flammable, deteriorates easily if exposed to moisture and can be prone to cracking and yellowing.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. This doll, from which this dress was removed, belonged to member Allan Blain's sister. It was donated to WDHS and then recently returned after an extended loan.This doll's dress is significant as it shows the style of dress of the c1860s as worn by both dolls and young girls and the fabrics available at that time. It would be a party dress.Remnants of the [VC02599] wax head doll's dress. The dress is made of pink gauze with coffee coloured lace trim and coffee and pink ribbons. The doll has wax legs with moulded boots, copostion arms. Thumb missing on left hand. Ginger wig. Holes in ears for earrings but earrings missing. No markings on doll. Doll’s face and shoulder plate badly damaged. Clothes need to washed. Large piece of lace in box with the doll. Appears to be of a later date than the doll. Printed sign with doll “Wax doll 1870.
