Functional Object - Ash Tray, Wiltshaw and Robinson, mid to late 1900's
Demonstrates domestic items manufactured soon after the establishment of the tramway systems in Ballarat.Ash Tray - white glazed on front, unglazed rear with gold edge trim, light weight China in the shape of a "spade" with an image of the intersection of Sturt St and Lydiard St from the Post Office looking at the buildings on the south side of Sturt St including the Town Hall with two electric trams and the tram lines in the view. One of the trams is hauling a trailer. Possibly made mid to late 1900's. Yields information about the SEC's provision of awards to employees for 12 months of safety and has a strong association with the person that the award was granted to.Two piece butter dish - nickel plated silver tray with an "Electricity Supply Department" badge glued to the dish with the SEC logo and words "Safety Award" and a glass dish - fluted that acts as a butter or jam dish. Advised by Donor, that following the award - 12 months without an accident, he was involved in one the following day. Stamped on rear of dish "Cambridge A1 Quality". Following the death of Hugh and Nell Ferguson, their families donated a number of items to the Kew Historical Society, including a French porcelain coffee set and a ceramic willow pattern dinner service. The latter was apparently bought piece by piece during the Great Depression. An item of historical interest donated by members of the Dods family in 2006. The Dods-Ferguson Collection includes a number of items once in the possession of the families related to or descended from two mayors of Kew: Cr. Hugh Ferguson and Cr. ... items domestic utensils A small tray and scraper designed ...This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. A table scraper or sweeper was used in households and fine dining situations to ensure crumbs and small pieces of food could be easily and quickly removed.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of domestic items used in the early 20th century.A small tray and scraper designed to sweep stray crumbs and bits of food off tabletops.
