Portable shaving stands became increasing popular from the Victorian Era. The double-sided mirror on the swivel base features a magnifying mirror on one side. The stand includes a bracket to hold a shaving brush and two ceramic bowls nested in the metal bowl holders. The ceramic bowls were produced by Royal Doulton and bear its mark underneath each bowl. These items were made in the 1930s or 1940s for sale as souvenirs of Empire Day in Victoria. As they were made by Royal Doulton of England they were high-quality souvenirs. Empire Day was established in 1905 to commemorate the reign of Queen Victoria and to promote and celebrate the importance of the British Empire in Britain and in the associated British Empire countries. It was celebrated on 24th May, the date of Queen Victoria’s birthday. In Victoria the day was celebrated with a school holiday and half-day business holiday, street and shop decorations, bonfires, concerts, processions etc. In 1958 Empire Day became known as Commonwealth Day. These items have no known local provenance but they were typical of the souvenirs that sold in the first half of the 20th century in Warnambool and all other parts of Australia around the time of Empire Day, May 24th . It will be useful for display. This cup and this saucer are made of white china with coloured images of Britannia, the rising sun, British flags, scrolls and the names of British Empire countries on each item. The cup rim and the saucer edge originally had gold trim but the gold has almost disappeared. Royal Doulton as part of the Minton Miniature series produced this heron model in 2001. A limited edition of 1,793 pieces were made, and this heron is number 89. The heron is a scaled down model of the original life-size piece first produced by Paul Comolera, c. 1892, as a walking stick and umbrella stand. Comolera was a French artist and sculptor, renowned for dramatic naturalistic forms, and life-size renditions of birds and animals that won him admiration in public and artistic circles. Wedgwood was founded on 1 May 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood and in 1987 merged with Waterford Crystal to create Waterford Wedgwood, an Ireland-based luxury brands group. After the 2009 purchase by KPS Capital, Wedgwood became part of a group of companies known as WWRD Holdings Ltd, an acronym for "Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton." In 1765, Josiah Wedgwood created a new earthenware form which impressed the then British Queen consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who gave permission to call it "Queen's Ware"; this new form sold extremely well across Europe. Wedgwood developed a number of further industrial innovations for his company, notably a way of measuring kiln temperatures accurately and new ware types Black Basalt and Jasper Ware. Wedgwood's most famous ware is jasperware. It was created to look like ancient cameo glass. It was inspired by the Portland Vase, a Roman vessel. Wedgwood had increasing success with hard paste porcelain which attempted to imitate the whiteness of tea-ware imported from China. High transportation costs and the demanding journey from the Far East meant that the supply of chinaware could not keep up with increasingly high demand. In 1812 Wedgwood produced their own bone china which, though not a commercial success at first eventually became an important part of an extremely profitable business.
