William Spencer and Samuel Browning's were in partnership from 1778 to 1781. When Ebenezer Rust joined the partnership of Spencer and Browning in 1784, the firm of Spencer, Browning & Rust was created. All of the original partners of Spencer, Browning & Rust had died by 1819. The firm was succeeded by Spencer, Browning & Co. in 1840, following the 1838 death of Ebenezer Rust, Junior, son of the original partner. The successor company was in business until 1870.A monocular telescope in a tapered brass tube, with the middle two thirds coved with dark-brown leather. The eye piece end in telescopic, and is probably an add on. 83 cm long, 6.5 cm diameter at large end, 4.0 cm diameter at eyepiece end. David Syme (1827-1908) was a newspaper proprietor who was born on 2 October 1827 at North Berwick, Scotland. Early in 1851, he went via Cape Horn to California seeking gold. By mid-1852 he was in Melbourne, and in the next three years prospected with some success on Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine and Beechworth diggings. In 1855 he lost a possible fortune at Egerton near Ballarat when a promising claim was jumped. Ebenezer Syme bought the insolvent Melbourne Age for £2000, and invited David Syme to take up a share. In September 1856 Syme put up some cash and his contracting business to obtain a half-share. He helped to manage the paper but returned to contracting late in 1857. When Ebenezer retired in 1859 Syme reluctantly returned to the business, and on Ebenezer's death next year he began his fifty-year career as publisher and editor of the Age. (C. E. The Illustrated Australian News is a former monthly news magazine of record in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its precursor Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers was first published in 1837 by Ebenezer Syme and David Syme. The title was later changed to The Illustrated Australian News and Musical Times and finally shortened to The Illustrated Australian News from no. 233 (Jan. 26, 1876) through to the final edition, no. 408 (May 1, 1889).Copy of an article in The Illustrated Australian News about a visit from Melbourne to Phillip Island.
