There was an abattoir adjoining the premises. In 1901 the Box Hill Reporter contained a protest regarding the proposed extension of the abattoir. In 1907 it was claimed that the development of land in Mont Albert was hindered by the smells and operations of the abattoir. Emma Uebergang and William James Atkinson married in 1930. They ran a mixed business in Whitehorse Road from 1926-1952. Stock included fruit and vegetables, sweets and some groceries. With Mr Atkinson is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries. To the left can be seen Whitehorse Road as it approaches the shopping centre and over the back of the horse can be seen the White Horse Hotel. The photo is taken in Whitehorse Road, near the corner of Elgar Road ...The boy is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries for Atkinson's greengrocery business and general store located at 815 Whitehorse Road. The photo is taken in Whitehorse Road, near the corner of Elgar Road looking towards Zetland Road. No details are known about Albert. The business was owned by Emma and William Atkinson. Emma was born in East Doncaster in 1903, the daughter of Carl Heinrich Uebergang and Sarah Buck. Emma’s grandparents were pioneers in Doncaster from 1855 and her father had an orchard in Andersons Creek Road, which was sold in 1961. She married William James Atkinson in 1930 and the Atkinsons ran the store from c1930 to c1950. (See file for further details). In retirement the couple lived at 63 Zetland Road, Mont Albert and William continued to work as an orchard hand. Emma died in March 2000 and is buried in Templestowe Cemetery. Elizabeth Anderson was particularly ...Elizabeth Maitland Anderson was born c1887, daughter of William Anderson and Elizabeth MacKay. After she retired she lived at the Loyal Orange Lodge in Station Street, Box Hill South. She died on 14 May 1974 at Box Hill. She was cremated and ashes interred at Springvale Cemetery – Banksia, Wall H, Niche 302. Elizabeth Anderson opened Mosgiel Prvate Hospital in 1923 and was the Matron there from 1923-1950. She had been Matron of the Queen Victoria Hospital for four years. She lived next to the hospital at 297 Mont Albert Road from 1923-1930s. 'Mosgiel' was very highly regarded by medical practitioners and patients alike. After her retirement in 1950, along with with Doctors Roberta and Agnes Donaldson, she opened the Elgar Private Nursing Home in Elgar Road. Born in Moonee Ponds in 1912 to Edmund Holt and Ellen Ruby Sutton, he married Edna Jean Pallot in 1937. They lived at 62 Broughton Road, Surrey hills, had 3 sons and were strongly associated with the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Alan was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and in his spare time recorded the occupancy of every property in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert at the beginning of each decade from 1890 to 1980. His collection of files and individual cards covers people, places, churches, clubs, businesses and other organisations in the area. Alan used this information to give talks and tours of the area and gifted his material to the local history collection through Jocelyn Hall.Unpublished manuscript / notes written by Alan Holt about settlers in and around Surrey Hills bound in-house. It rises as a spring on the slopes of the hill at the corner of Canterbury Road and Elgar Road in Surrey Hills, the location of a Melbourne Water tower and reservoir. It has been channelled underground from this point in pipes as far as Union Road. South Surrey Park runs along both sides of Back Creek from where the creek crosses Union Rd near Rose Avenue to where it crosses Riversdale Road just west of Through Road. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road.
