One of a series of five photographs taken from the same position on the southern side of Ryrie St. at the intersection of Garden St., East Geelong/. Trams are stabled on a stub termonis that could take at least five cars in Ryrie St. The East line, opened in stages in 1923, curves off to the right. Patrons are walking to the trams following the end of a football match at Corio Oval, 0.5km to the east. The photo shows motorised trailer No. 12 pulling one of the two remaining trailers, both heavily loaded. Its destination is WEST GEELONG. Date is likely to be winter 1923 -4 or -5. The photo taken at the corner of Moorabool and Malop Streets, is looking south along Moorabool St. Shows Geelong tram 17 tram about to turn "wrong line" from Moorabool St into Malop St. The tram has the destination of West. Why it is turning at this location is unknown. In the background is another tram running south along Moorabool St along with other trams at the intersection with Ryrie St. The photo shows four buses parked on both streets. In the background are the Solomons store, and the National Bank of Australasia buildings. Has many parked cars. Photograph - Geelong MESCo Bus East Geelong, c1920
The photo shows the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo), bus at the East Geelong terminus. MESCo operated the Geelong tram system from 1912 and opened the tram line to this location "East Geelong" in 1923. The terminus was at the Geelong Cemetery, with a wooden waiting room shelter with signage about the building being used for passengers only and prohibiting the posting of bills. The buses ran from the railway station and Moorabool St wharf from 1912 until they were replaced by trams in 1923. The bus is also seen in item 4315. The photograph shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration, c1920 at the Wharf terminus, known as the Moorabool Street Pier. The tram line was opened in 1912 and closed in 1940 when the track in Corio St was extended to the Beach terminus. There are a number of horse-drawn vehicles in the view with goods being loaded or unloaded on the ship moored on the right. The tramway was operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo). The photograph from the collection of Ken Magor was published in the Sydney Tramway Museum's magazine Trolley Wire in April 1981. The photo caption advises - "The steamship to the right is the Edina, a veteran Port Phillip steamer which was launched in 1854 and was not broken up until 1957."
