Drawing on parchmentHand-drawn survey of what is now 1-5 City Road, Ringwood. Drawn by K Arndt, licensed surveyor, 237 Queen Street, Melbourne Tel 5118 on 25 September 1926. The block of land in question was 2 roods, 21 and 8/10 perches in size. The location was between Haig Street in the north, City Road in the south, Wantirna Road in the west and Victoria Road in the east. The Good Shepherd Retirement Village (Lutheran) now occupies the land. The drawing shows a number of existing weatherboard houses, fences and frontage sizes. A number of named roads were defined but no longer exist, these were Duffy Street (to the west), Evans Street (east) and Victoria Street (further east). Ireland Street still exists in the south.

Hugh Gray was the son of Charles Gray and Robina Tait. Hugh was born on 7 January 1810 at Alloa Clackmananshire, Scotland, and married Elizabeth Paterson on 8 July 1831 at Glascow, Scotland. Hugh, Elizabeth and their eight children boarded the 'Borneuf' and set sail for Australia from Glasgow on 20 May 1852. In October 1853 Hugh Gray set up a blacksmiths forge on Main Road Ballarat. He was a member of the Ballarat Reform League. In July 1857 he donated 5 pounds to the Humffray Testimonial on behalf of the Blacksmith Association. In 1858 and 1877 he was the President of the Caledonian Society, and a committee member at other times. Gray was also one of the first promoters of the Mechanics' Institute. On 14 March 1869 Hugh Gray started the Philosophical Association of Ballarat. Hugh Gray died on 02 June 1880. His obituary notes '... all the patrons of the long since dead Caledonian sports will remember his shepherd's plaid costume and his untiring energy at the annual gathering whether as president or committee member to even a private member of the society. his end was peaceful and he will be buried as he wished in good old Scottish fashion ...'Photograph of Hugh Gray.ballarat, blacksmith, hugh gray, hugh grey, scotland, scottish, caledonian, kilt, borneuf

Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this meat mincer, her favorite gadget. "Every Sunday until I was about 12 (mid-1950s), there would be roast lamb with all the trimmings, good homemade mint sauce, roast potato and pumpkin, parsnip, tomato and onion pie with breadcrumb topping, fresh green peas and gravy. Monday night was Shepherd’s Pie, and I looked forward to it. The cold meat was cut up and fed through the mincing machine fastened to the table at Riversdale Rd. I don't remember it ever coming out at Walsh Street. Maybe Patricia was over cold roast lamb at that stage. I loved turning the handle and watching the meat squidge out, could hardly call it mince, some onion and lastly a slice of bread to push the bits through. Then the mincer all came apart, was washed and put away until next Monday. The meat and onion tossed with leftover gravy, mash on top, loads of butter, etched with a fork tine and baked in the oven. Served with tomato sauce, very good." A beige coloured, heavy meat mincer. Detachable (discs 2) and outer cover for mincing. Long handle with wood end. Agnes (b 1894, Linton; died 1977, Box Hill) had been a masseur before entering medical school at Melbourne University. She transferred to Edinburgh and graduated from there. She joined her sister Amelia Roberta, known as Roberta, at ‘Luxmee’, 4 Windsor Crescent. She was born in 1891 and died at Surrey Hills on 1 May 1972. She had a long illness before her death. Agnes is seated left foreground; Roberta is standing at the right. Their father James Blair Donaldson had been a doctor at Linton, near Skipton and a brother, James Blair Donaldson Jnr (1888-1971) was a doctor in Skipton. A second brother Alexander Somerville Donaldson (1887-1963) also lived in Surrey Hills. He had a number of addresses and occupations including: 1927 - 44 Albany Crescent (Chauffeur); 1949 - 5 Beatrice Avenue (mechanic) and 1963 - 28 Albert Crescent (gardener). Their mother was Amelia Jane Emerson. Transcription of grave in Section C, Baptist in Melbourne General Cemetery gives further family details: “In affectionate remembrance of Jane Duff the beloved wife of Robt. DONALDSON who died at Carlton, Victoria, 8 Aug 1889, age 56 years and of their children David Russell and Mary McIntosh who died in infancy. Until the Easter glory lights the skies; until the dead in Jesus shall arise and He shall come, but not in lowly guise Good night. East also Agnes SHEPHERD mother of Jane D. DONALDSON born at Dundee Scotland 30 Apr 1800, died at Carlton 8 Apr 1891. West also Robt.
