Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. WW1 Historical significanceNext of Kin Plaque: 6310 Pte H. McGregor. The round bronze Memorial Plaque shows Britannia and a lion on the front and bears the inscription 'He died for freedom and honour'. The full name of the dead soldier is engraved on the right hand side of the plaque. No rank, unit or decorations are shown, befitting the equality of the sacrifice made by all casualties. The shape and appearance of the plaque earned it nicknames such as 'The Dead Man's Penny, and the 'Widows Penny'. Plaque is still in it's original envelope addressed to Mr A. McGregor.Gunner H.G. Enlisted 8.7.40, barked 5.2.1941, disembarked Middle East 24.3.1941, posted to 2/12th Field Regt, served in the Seige of Tobruk, transferred to AACS 25.11.1941, graded group 3 Driver Mechanic 28.8.1942, hospital with lacerated scalp 12.11.1942, rejoin unit 8.1.1943, embark for Aust 22.2.1943, disembark Sydney 23.3.1943, serves then with canteen services, reclassified medically and discharged on 10.3.1944. The piece missing in the pocket book was caused by a piece of Shrapnel.Red-covered book, 127 pages. Useful information for soldiers. Harry Foster Midgley No 3414 enlisted in the AIF in 11th reinforcements 14 th Batt on 14.7.1915 aged 21 years 4 months. Embarked for Egypt 11.10.1915, hospitalised 14.12.1915 with Dysentry, returned to unit 4.2.1916, transferred to 46th Batt 3.3.1916 then 12th FAB as a gunner 17.3.1916. Embarked for France 2.6.1916, transferred to 11th FAB, WIA GSW to left ear, transferred to 4th Div Ammunition column 25.6.1917, WIA 1.8.1917 with GSW’s to chest, back, right arm, right leg. Uniform issued to Arthur Thomas MANLY No 431130 RAAF. Arthur enlisted on 21.5.1943 age 18 years. He trained at various places, some including Narrandera, East and West Sale and Rathmines. On 8.6.1944 he was posted as an Air Gunner and on 8.12.1944 he reached the rank of Flt Sgt. He flew his first Operational flight at sea with No 2 Sqd RAAF on 21.12.1944. He embarked for Balikpapan on 12.6.1945 with 2 Sqd Mitchell Bombers. He flew 19 Operational sorties which included 5 strikes and attacks. He was discharged on 22.1.1946 with the rank of WO11.RAAF Staff Sgt, service jacket, blue. Chest (L) has 2 x WWII ribbons & Air Gunner's Badge buttons are darkened brass. Light blue cloth eagles sewn on each shoulder. It has 4 pockets & the waist belt is stored on rear of jacket in loops. Trousers not included.uniiform, raaf, ww2
