The artist, Clifton Pugh, grew up in Briar Hill. He served in WWII and settled at Cottles Bridge, building his own house and forming Dunmoochin artist colony. He married three times and had two sons. Howard Arkley was born 5 May 1951 in Surrey Hills. His family lived at 72 Essex Road; the house has been demolished and replaced by units.
