To commemorating 40 years since The Dawn Of a New Era for the Royal Australian Navy - 1965-2005 - A limited release of a graphite print of Guided Missile Destroyers HMA Ships PERTH (38), HOBART (39) and BRISBANE (41) served the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) from 1965 and 2001.These ships were the first for the RAN to have been designed for the 'Missile Era' and were also the first to be not of a British design instead they were purchased from the United States of America. HMAS Perth (D29), a modified Leander-class light cruiser. Commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Amphion in 1936, she was sold to the RAN three years later. The ship served until 1 March 1942, when she was sunk during the Battle of Sunda Strait. HMAS Perth (D 38), the lead ship of the Perth-class guided missile destroyers. Built as a Charles F. Adams-class destroyer derivative for the RAN and commissioned in 1965, the ship served until decommissioning in 1999. She was sunk as a dive wreck off the coast of Albany, Western Australia, in 2001. George Bradshaw MORRISS No 23670 enlisted in the RAN on 23.10.1939 aged 17 years. He was posted to Australian light cruiser, HMAS Perth. HMAS Perth was torpedoed & sunk by the Japanese Navy in the Battle of the Sunda Strait, between the islands of Java & Sumatra in late February 1942. Approximately half of the crew were lost & the remainder taken into captivity. 106 died as POWs. George died at Sandakan on 29.5.1945. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Items in the collection relating to ARTHUR GEORGE HOLLEY no 13556 RAN Refer cat no 2134 for his service record. The photographs are from his personal album, and are mainly official photographs widely available among the services. The photographs are from Australian , British and American sources. This set coincides with the Hobart's service around the time of the loss of Singapore. The Norah Moller was a British merchantman bombed in Singapore harbor while trying to escape. The Hobart rescued the bulk of crew and passengers.
