Painting, Loris Button, 'Hand III' by Loris Button, 2004
... Oil painting on paper depicting a hand holding an egg... on paper depicting a hand holding an egg, mounted on wooden panel ...Loris BUTTON (27/02/1951- ) Born Melbourne Dr Loris Button grew up in Melbourne, completing undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Tasmania. Her PhD thesis employed self portraiture as a means for reflecting on the self, time and ageing in contemporary culture. From 1981 – 1986 Loris lived and studied in Hobart before returning to Melbourne. She lectured at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy from 1987. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Ballarat and the nearby town of Creswick. Loris retired from an academic career at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) at the end of 2010. Loris has continued a post-retirement association with the Arts Academy through her role as an Honorary Research Fellow. Working with prints, paintings and drawings on handmade paper, her work is regularly shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Oil painting on paper depicting a hand holding an egg, mounted on wooden panel.art, artwork, loris button, button, hand, egg, available -

Photograph, Clayton Keefe, 'Uncanny Valley #2' by Clayton Keefe, 2023
... Colour photograph of metal arm and hand holding a wine... Photography AI Alumni Colour photograph of metal arm and hand holding ...Human Archetypes, The Uncanny Valley, and Inorganic Human Forms The work interrogates the recurring concept of humankind’s fascination with replicating herself in her own image. Just as the Judeo-Christian God is said to have created humans in his own image, we replicate ourselves in art and then science. We seek to make an artificial intelligence that may well be fraught with our own survival as a species, and we refine these creations until we can no longer tell if they are human or facsimilie. Even when this is impractical; when a non-human robotic form may well be better suited to the task, we persist in making our new companions in human form. So much so that when our creations develop their own ability to create human forms, they inherently seek perfection of human characteristic when no such thing exists, and all humans are flawed. My work takes the human and reverses this process, seeking to see how dehumanising one can make the subject of portraiture before it becomes ‘the other’. In doing so, I look for what makes us human, and how we portray or present various aspects of humanity and human endeavour as stereotypical archetypes. I have used, as a paying subscriber, the artificial intelligence presented in the Adobe Creative Suite, which is ethically sourced from Adobe’s own stock collection which itself has been purchased from artists, as a launchpad for this exploration, thus invoking concepts of meta - where the AI works on a project that attempts to dissect the very reasons and underlying foundations of humankind’s desire to create AI in the first place. Some of the work touches on the idea of a human/AI connection, extending to the concepts of an interspecies symbiosis, and whether a human could experience a genuine love of a non-organic human form, and vice versa. William and May Palstra were married in 1920; 60 Guildford Road was their first and only home. William was with the university when he joined the Australian Flying Corps in WW1. He went back to university on his return from the war but in 1926 when the RAAF was formed he joined it as he had enjoyed flying. He took his family to England while he did 2 years training at the Imperial College in London under Air Vice-Marshall Jones. He was chosen as the Australian representative on a special flight of an experimental airship designed to fly over long distances. The test flight was destined for India, then on to Australia. Its passengers were high level British officials including the UK Secretary of State. It struck bad weather after crossing the Channel, clipped a hill and crashed in France. Some of the crew survived but William Palstra was killed. Mrs Palstra did not receive any compensation; only a small allowance, then cut during the Depression. She was given some support from the Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen's association. Donor, Margaret Thornton was a daughter of William and May Palstra; one of her daughters, Julia Thornton still lives in the house in 2009. Donation form signed by Julia Thornton. Margaret and Jocelyn had a brother, also William. The house remains in 2009 with extensions to the rear and side.Black and white photo of William and May Palstra and 2 of their children in the garden of their home. Tool - Scythe, 1930-1960
... Scythe with long wood Snath (curved handle) with 1 hand... Scythe with long wood Snath (curved handle) with 1 hand holding ...A Scythe was one of the most important of all agricultural hand tools, consisting of a curved blade fitted at an angle to a long, curved handle and used for cutting grain. In modern scythes the handle has a projecting peg that is grasped by one hand, facilitating control of the swinging motion by which grass and grain are cut. The exact origin of the scythe is unknown, but it was little used in the ancient world. It came into wide use only with agricultural developments of the Carolingian era (8th century AD) in Europe, when the harvesting and storing of hay became important to support livestock through winters. Scythes can still be found in use today by hobby farmers and permaculturists. ( producing food, by using ways that do not deplete the earth's natural resources) to cut grass in a more eco-friendly way as opposed to using a machine.A hand tool used for the cutting of crops and grain, modern versions are still being produced today in Europe.
