The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years. The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. This is a needle book containing needles. It appears that the Army and Navy Needle books were not issued to soldiers or sailors but were made for home use in the Western World - Europe, America and presumably Australia. They were made mainly in Germany and some were made in Japan but were not sold in wartime. They were sold before and after World War Two and often featured images of well-known ships of the day. This folder has images of the Europa and the Bremen, two ships made in Germany which belonged to the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line (N.D.L.) and which were launched in the late 1920s. They were the two most advanced high speed steam turbine ocean liners of their day. The Bremen was gutted by fire in 1941. The Europa was captured by the Allies in 1945 and used as a troopship, then it went to France where it was became an ocean liner named Liberte. It was scrapped in 1963. The newspaper cutting tells of a presentation by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill to Private Les Lawlor on his embarking for overseas service. It is not known to which war the cutting refers and no reference can be found to Private Les Lawlor. No connection between the two items (needle book and cutting) has been established but they have always been together in our collection. The needle book is of social significance but has no known local provenance. The cutting contains information suitable for our files.1 This is a piece of thickened paper folded in two to make a folder containing four packets of needles. The folder is green with two images of ships on the back and the front. The images are multi-coloured and have an ornamental edging. The needles of different sizes are contained in black paper folded four times to enclose the needles (13 still in the folded paper – all rusty). It appears one needle packet may be missing. .2 This is a cutting from a newspaper regarding a soldier leaving for overseas military service. Shaving soap scuttles are distinguished from shaving mugs by having a separate area for hot water. The hot water is for dipping a shaving brush into to make a lather with the soap which is then applied to the skin before using the razor. Vintage scuttles are often elaborately decorated. Between 1880 and 1920 is the original time period for the occupational shaving mug. Most men owned a shaving mug, either at home or at a barber shop. Mugs purchased for home use typically were purchased through local stores, had more variety in style but usually went without a name. Barber shops sold mugs with the owners’ names on them partly because they thought that shaving rash came from sharing the same soap. In reality, the rash was not a result of soap but of unsterilized razors. Transfer ; The Duryea Motor Wagon was among the first standardized automobiles and among the first powered by gasoline. Fifteen examples were built by the Duryea Motor Wagon Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, between 1893 and 1896. Their enterprise followed the first commercially available automobile which was patented by Karl Benz on January 29, 1886, and put into production in 1888. Clag was used in homes, schools and offices for sticking mostly paper and cardboard together. It was applied with a brush. In later years adhesives became varied with chemicals being combined enabling many different surfaces to be stuck together. Typewriters pre dated computers. This typewriter was possibly used in an office or at home. It was used with an inked tape which may have been only black or had both red and black ink along it. Multiple copies of the material being typed were done using carbon paper inserted between sheets of paper. The original paper was easily identified.Used in the Kiewa Valley.Small grey metal typewriter with deep green key board with gold letters on top.The margin rod is marked in inches and it has keys for pounds, dollars and cents, inches and fractions. The loading of A4 paper is done manually. The keys that hit the paper are stainless steel. The keyboard slopes up to the top which is partially hollow with a gap that exposes the stainless steel keys. The cylinder is at the top and at the back with control knobs on each side. This typewriter has 2 sheets of paper with carbon paper between them to demonstrate how copies were made (but there isn't an inked tape in it so the copies aren't authentic)Centre front: "Royal" Letters of the alphabet on the keys. This item belonged to Daisy Close, born 1899, at Murrangowar. She was the mother of Ethel Pike. Daisy Close married Ed Jensen who lived at Murrangowar. The Jensens were farmers. The wristing set was probably used at home rather than at school.This book, together with a book awarded to Daisy Close form part of the history of the Close family who were early settlers at Murrangowar in the late 19th century.A black rectangular box -probably cardboard covered with leatherette. The SEC had Showrooms in regional Victoria including one at Mt Beauty where this booklet came from.The S.E.C.V. constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme employing many workers. They built the townships of Mt Beauty and Bogong and assisted with the infrastructure required to support the influx of population. In the Mt Beauty shopping centre, one of the shops was the SEC Showroom which sold electrical appliances and gave advice on their use. The RDNS Sister is visiting the mother and babe in their home. She is using sterile equipment and swabs to firstly moisten the tulle gras to enable ease of its removal before redressing the open areas on the babes skin with sterile dressings. With RDNS visiting the home of the mother, the young babes routine can continue to be established at home, rather than them having to regularly visit a Doctor or Hospital department for redressing of the babes lesions. The Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885, provided wound care to their patients who ranged in age from the very young to the elderly. The patients required their wounds to be dressed following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, skin conditions, cancer, leg ulcers etc. As research developed better products and dressing materials, the methods and medication applied to wounds changed. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), the Education department developed wound care programs, such as the Leg Ulcer Management Program to provide their Trained nurses (Sisters) with methods of best quality care. They ran a program for Wound Care Specialists who made assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field as needed. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and Hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctors. On the left in the black and white photograph is a Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Sister, who has short, straight blonde hair, and is wearing a white gown over her uniform is bending over a bassinet as she attends a baby with a skin condition. The Sister has her arms extended with a pair of forceps in her left hand, and in her right hand, another pair of forceps with a cotton wool swab attached is touching tulle gras on one of the wounds on the babes outstretched right arm. The baby is on her covered change table and is wearing a singlet and an opened patterned jumpsuit with her right upper area uncovered. Her mother, who has short dark hair and is wearing a dark sleeveless V neck tunic style frock over a light coloured long sleeve top, is behind and bending over the change table holding her babes right outstretched hand. She is also holding a dummy in that hand. The mother's left extended arm and hand is on the left shoulder of her babe. The Mason jar, named after American tinsmith John Landis Mason, who patented it in 1858, is a molded glass jar used in home canning to preserve food. The jar's mouth has a screw thread on its outer perimeter to accept a metal ring or "band". The band, when screwed down, presses a separate stamped steel disc-shaped lid against the jar's rim. An integral rubber ring on the underside of the lid creates a hermetic seal. The bands and lids usually come with new jars, but they are also sold separately. While the bands are reusable, the lids are intended for single-use when canning. Glass jars and metal lids are still commonly used in home canning while they have been largely supplanted by other methods for commercial canning (such as tin cans and plastic containers).
