This painting is for the Museum. It was a gift to me by an ex prisoner, whom I met when he came to Melbourne with Vic, Nicky and others. His name is Luigi Poggioli and he was a most distinguished gentleman, so distinct and well educated that I still remember him clearly (and I do not have a good memory). Perhaps I remember so well because of his kind words in verse on the painting which read :(Translation) "Ungrateful land with handsome race of Italian blood who with their hard work enriched you". Yes I believe I remember so well because of this verse. Extract from a letter from Mrs Tolaini now living in London. She is the Wife of Vittorio Tolaini who was on the Dunera and wrote of his experiences in "Voyage of an Alien" June 1991. In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp. German National, Walter Kiessling snr. an employee of a German firm was interned in Camp 1, Tatura. His wife remained in Melbourne where there son Walter was born. The father was immediately taken to Melbourne under escort to see his wife and baby son. Subsequently his wife would travel to Murchison by train and ride her bicycle, with the baby in a basket, out to the camp to visit her husband. Later visits were with a friend in their DKW car. Young Walter was christened by a Lutheran Pastor in the camp, under the supervision of Major Schrader, the Garrison Commandant. A concise and interesting story of the Loveday internment group Barmera SA with first hand knowledge and donated to the Museum by its author Ern Whitmore, born 1899. The forward by Lt. E. T Dean DSO VD is particularly worthy of note.A 32 page manuscript each enclosed in an individual clear plastic envelope. The top half of the front page "internment in South Australia" which is superimposed on an indistinct plan of probably be an internment camp. The lower half has a sentry with rifle in a sentry box overlooking a camp at night. Creator Walter Kiessling was interned in September 1939, leaving his pregnant wife, Rosa, alone in Melbourne. After visiting Walter in Dhurringile Interment Camp and then Camp 1, wife Rosa then appealed to Camp 1 Commandant Major Schrader for permission to have Walter visit her and the baby in hospital under guard escort. Soon after, permission was given to take the baby to Camp 1 for a christening with a Lutheran Pastor. The camp sites today are on private property, and as they were dismantled after the war, and on the closure of the Migrant camp, very little physical evidence remains today.Camp 3 held 1000 internees, Germans, Jews and Italians, including German Lutheran families from New Guinea, German families from Palestine (Templer settlement) and Austrian Jewish refugees.
