This is the second Bevan John Shield The Touchstone December 1939 p. 9: House rivalry was greatly stimulated on Sports' Day by the gift of the Bevan John Shield. The Shield is made of rosewood with silver plates attached, on which is to be inscribed the name of the Winning House. Also each year an enamel band the colour of the victorious house is to be placed around the silver plate. We are grateful to MrJohn for his generous and much appreciated gift. John Austin Anderson was the son of Daniel William and Elizabeth Jane Anderson, and husband of Ethel M. Anderson of 312 Ripon Street South, Ballarat. John Anderson was a sergeant with the 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company. He was 34 years of age when he was killed in action in France on 01 July 1916. Photograph of John A. Bosch (Bush) and the Greensborough apple tree purported to have come from John Batman's orchard circa 1840. A Melbourne Leader article about the tree was dated 9/4/1910 and this photo appeared therein. Johannes Bosch came to Australia in 1884 aged 17. He married Henrietta Duck, had 3 children and divorced in 1903. Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. Formal photograph taken on the occasion of the official opening. Wilson's private Cool Stores at Hurstbridge comprised six cooling chambers with a refrigeration plant to be used by local growers to store their produce. This photo was found in the Savage family home, formerly the home of Rev. Chase believed to be formerly of Panton Hill or Hurstbridge. (House may have been shifted from Panton Hill - now demolished.) Rev. Chase probably in picture, although not reported as attending in any of the newspaper reports of the day.This photo represents the significance of the orcharding industry in the Hurstbridge and surrounding area at the beginning of the twenteith century.
