This plate comes from the Congregational Church in Warrnambool. It was probably part of a set of crockery used by church members at social events. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was established in 1862 when Robert Winton and Thomas Nayler set up a meeting to discuss the possibility of establishing an Independent Church in Warrnambool. The first minister was William Pentland and the first church was opened in 1864 in Liebig Street. Samuel Nettleton was a notable early church member, being Superintendent of the Sunday School for 60 years. A new church was opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1973 the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the Uniting Church in 1977. In 1976 the former Congregational Church in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army. This plate is of interest as a memento of the former Congregational Church in Warrnambool. In the early to mid 20th century this church was a strong and influential force in the Warrnambool community. This is a cream-coloured dinner plate made of china. This is a cream-coloured china plate with a gold trim around the outer edges and the name of the church in the centre in a black and white scroll pattern. The gold trim is now almost obliterated. This trophy is one of several awarded in the 1930s by the Inter Church Indoor Sports Association in Warrnambool. It is a grand aggregate cup and it has been won jointly by the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) and the Church of England Men’s Society (C.E.M.S.). Both of these men’s groups were prominent in the 1930s. A Congregational Church was opened in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1864 and transferred to Henna Street in 1940. This Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army in 1979 when the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church merged to form the Uniting Church. The Anglican Church in Warrnambool, called Christ Church, was established in Henna Street in the 1850s under the direction of the first minister, Archdeacon Beamish. The present church was constructed over the ensuing decades with the square tower added in 1882. This trophy is of interest as it comes from the 1930s and is one of the trophies given by the now-defunct Inter Church Indoor Sports Association of Warrnambool. It also has connections to both the Congregational Church and the Anglican Church in Warrnambool. This is an electro plated nickel silver cup with two side handles and an ornate stem attached to a silver base. The cup is mounted on a circular Bakelite stand. Established during world War Two, the first 'Everyman's Hut' was built at Bonegilla camp to serve army personnel. An 'Everywoman's Hut' was established at Bandianna and was staffed by women. The hut's were also staffed by ministers of religion who had returned to Australia due to war plus volunteers. Everyman's staff wore a military cut uniform and, where appropriate, were given officer status by local commanders. Today, Everyman's Welfare Service caters for the well being of members of the ADF and their families. Reverend William ‘Bill’ Leslie Higgins (b. 15/1/1925, Renmark, Victoria, d. 18/10/1998) and Mrs Ella May Higgins (née Leersen b. 3/11/1921, Avoca, Victoria, d. 24/5/2003). William was ordained to the Methodist Church of Australia on September 1, 1959. Bill and Ella were involved with many communities throughout Bill’s full-time service until 1989. These parishes included Underbool, Wycheproof, Drysdale, Wonthaggi, South Yarra, Eltham, Nathalia, Murchison and Seymour. Bill and Ella touched many thousands lives during their ministry. Bill passed away in 1998 while assisting with a Sunday evening service near Drysdale, and Ella continued to dedicate her time to others until her death in 2003. Information received via Brian and Irene Robertson's son, Mark (15 Dec 2023), noted that in 1969 they lived in Prahran and by 1971 they would have been appointed to Briar Hill (now Greensborough). Brian Robertson's parents and at least one set of his grandparents were also Salvation Army officers (primarily from Victoria), whilst Irene was originally from Perth and she had 2 other sisters that became Salvation Army Officers as well. Irene also had 3rd sister and younger brother who were linked to the Salvos (as was Brian’s brother). After several years in church work, Brian and Irene transferred over to the Social Services branch of the Salvos and worked with homeless men, broken families, drug & alcohol dependent clients (similar to what Brendan Nottle does in Burke St), family stores and eventually seniors (nursing homes). Brian, known as Robbie passed away in 2013, and Irene is currently living in a retirement unit. Benjamin Rank was considered by many to be the father of plastic surgery in Australia. He was born on 14 January 1911 in Heidelberg, Victoria, where his father, Wreghitt Rank, owned a grain store and mill. His mother was Bessie née Smith. He was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne, and Ormond College, University of Melbourne, graduating with many honours and prizes. He did a two-year residency in the Royal Melbourne Hospital before going to London to specialise in surgery. There he did junior posts at St James' Hospital, Balham, but soon became fascinated by the new specialty of plastic surgery and was appointed assistant plastic surgeon at Hill End (Bart's EMS unit). Joining the Royal Australasian Army Medical Corps in 1940, he commanded their plastic surgical unit in Egypt. In 1942, he returned to Australia to set up a plastic and maxillofacial unit at Heidelberg Military Hospital. Among the patients treated there was one Flight Lieutenant John Gorton, who went on to become Prime Minister of Australia. In 1946 he was the first honorary plastic surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He spent much time overseas and was instrumental in setting up the specialty of plastic surgery in India, for which he set up 'Interplast' - a charity supported by the Rotary Clubs to offer training and expertise to Asian and Pacific nations. He was the Sims Commonwealth Travelling Professor of the College in 1958, Moynihan lecturer in 1972, President of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons in 1965 and President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons from 1966 to 1968. He made important contributions to the study of Marjolin's ulcer, radiation carcinoma, and the transition from benign to malignant melanoma. He also made a major contribution to hand surgery, and his textbook Surgery of repair as applied to hand injuries (Livingstone, 1953) ran to four editions. He wrote extensively, including an autobiography, and was a talented painter. He was a tireless campaigner for no-fault motor accident insurance and was President of the St John Ambulance Association. He married Barbara Lyle Facy in 1938. They had one son Andrew, and three daughters, Helen, Julie and Mary (one of whom became a nurse). He died on 26 January 2002. Program for a rally arranged by the City of St Kilda on 26 June 1940 at St Kilda Town Hall to recruit numbers and raise war savings. Includes a detachable application form for War Savings Certificates on the back page. One of the speakers at the rally was Gunner Harold Holt MHR, who later served as Prime Minister in 1966-67. Holt was elected to Parliament in 1935 at the age of 27. He enlisted in the Militia in February 1939, joining a part-time artillery unit for businessmen and professionals and, May 1940, without resigning his seat, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force with the intent of becoming a full-time soldier. He was posted to the 2/4th Field Regiment, holding the rank of gunner. Within three months his brief military career came to an end when three senior government ministers died in a plane crash, an election was called, and he was given leave from the Army to campaign. Albert Thomas Holden was born in 1866 at Geelong, died in 1935 and is buried in Boroondara cemetery. From 1883-84 he taught in Kyneton and became a Methodist lay preacher. He graduated with a B.A. from Ormond College in 1888. He entered the Methodist ministry and worked in Burwood and at the Omeo Home Mission. During 1892 he toured Europe and the Middle East with Rev Bickford. In 1898 Holden was an army chaplain and served South Africa. He became Methodist Chaplain General in 1913. In 1904 Holden became Secretary of Methodist Home Missions and traveled throughout Australia. Holden was General Superintendent of the Methodist Church of Australasia from 1929 - 1932 and then President- General. Holden became a Freemason in 1898. Keith Pither was born at Shepparton in 1914 and grew up on a farm. Attended Otira Methodist Home Mission Training College from 1936 and by 1939 was a probation minister at Burnie (Tas.). Enlisted in the army 1939 and served in the Middle East and Northern Australia. In 1943 he was ordained in the field as a chaplain and later served in New Guinea. Married Allison (Alison?) Brown in 1945 and they had four children, Brian, Rhonda, Andrew and Howard. Completed his studies at Melbourne University 1946. Alec Pederick was born in 1902 and left school at 15 to work on his parents' farm at Wyuna, Kyabrum,Victoria. After receiving a sense of call he trained for the Methodist ministry and was appointed to his first parish at Zeehan, Tasmania in 1927. He was called to serve with the Methodist Overseas Mission in New Britain and New Ireland in 1929. He married Dorothy Clarke just before he left. After four years in PNG he returned through ill-health to Victoria. He was appointed to the Beaufort Circuit in 1933 and then in 1936 to the Methodist Home Missions Department. He was called up as an Army chaplain in 1942 and sent on active service in Papua New Guinea. He was discharged in 1944 and returned to the Home Missions Department. He was appointed acting General Superintendent in 1944 and then General Superintendent in 1946, a position he held until 1962. Rev Alec Pederick (1902 - 1972). Trained at Queen's College. Commenced his ministry at Zeehan, Tasmania in 1927. In 1929 he went to Rabaul P.N.G. and to Piniqidu in 1931. Returning to Australia in 1933 was appointed to Beaufort Circuit and then to the Methodist Home Missions Department. Served as a Chaplain in the A.I.F 1942 - 1944. After discharge from the army Rev. Pederick resumed working with Home Missions, becoming General Superintendent and residing at “Otira”, the Home Mission Training College in Kew, at which he was also principal. President of Conference in 1955. Died 19 August 1972. Rev Andrew J. Pearce (1912 - 1986) Entered the Salvation Army Training College in 1934. Joined the United Aborigines Mission and served 2 years in Oolea and 10 years in Finnis Spring. Returned to Victoria in 1950 and was appointed by the Methodist Church as a Home Missionary at Lancefield. Accepted as a candidate for the ministry in 1952 and appointed Probationary Minister to Colac (Elliminyt). Ordained in 1958 and served 7 years as Secretary of the Home Missions Department (1957 - 1864), 6 years as Chaplain of the Royal Melbourne and Royal Children's Hospitals (1964 - 1970) and 7 years in the Footscray Yarraville Circuit (1970 - 1977. Rev Alec Pederick (1902 - 1972). Trained at Queen's College. Commenced his ministry at Zeehan, Tasmania in 1927. In 1929 he went to Rabaul P.N.G. and to Piniqidu in 1931. Returning to Australia in 1933 was appointed to Beaufort Circuit and then to the Methodist Home Missions Department. Served as a Chaplain in the A.I.F 1942 - 1944. After discharge from the army Rev. Pederick resumed working with Home Missions, becoming General Superintendent and residing at “Otira”, the Home Mission Training College in Kew, at which he was also principal. President of Conference in 1955. Died 19 August 1972. Rev Andrew J. Pearce (1912 - 1986) Entered the Salvation Army Training College in 1934. Joined the United Aborigines Mission and served 2 years in Oolea and 10 years in Finnis Spring. Returned to Victoria in 1950 and was appointed by the Methodist Church as a Home Missionary at Lancefield. Accepted as a candidate for the ministry in 1952 and appointed Probationary Minister to Colac (Elliminyt). Ordained in 1958 and served 7 years as Secretary of the Home Missions Department (1957 - 1864), 6 years as Chaplain of the Royal Melbourne and Royal Children's Hospitals (1964 - 1970) and 7 years in the Footscray Yarraville Circuit (1970 - 1977. James Rogers was born in Wallaroo, South Australia, but came to Sailor's Gully, Eaglehawk with his family as an infant. He was converted in a Salvation Army meeting at Bendigo. He became a member of the Primitive Methodist Church at Eaglehawk. Stationed at: Foster-Toora, Terang, Eltham/Greensborough, Balaclava, Kew, Northcote/Thornbury. Served AMF in Korea and Japan. Chaplain Balcombe Army Camp. Retired 1981. Albert Thomas Holden was born in 1866 at Geelong, died in 1935 and is buried in Boroondara cemetery. From 1883-84 he taught in Kyneton and became a Methodist lay preacher. He graduated with a B.A. from Ormond College in 1888. He entered the Methodist ministry and worked in Burwood and at the Omeo Home Mission. During 1892 he toured Europe and the Middle East with Rev Bickford. In 1898 Holden was an army chaplain and served South Africa. He became Methodist Chaplain General in 1913. In 1904 Holden became Secretary of Methodist Home Missions and traveled throughout Australia. Holden was General Superintendent of the Methodist Church of Australasia from 1929 - 1932 and then President- General. Holden became a Freemason in 1898.
