Metal money boxes shaped like common familiar objects became popular in the 18th century. In the 20th century, they were used to promote and advertise events and businesses. In the 1950s metal money boxes shaped like a bank building were given away to children by their parents' bank to encourage them to save money. This metal money box was produced for the company of OXO Ltd of London. It was made specifically as a souvenir of the Coronation of King George VI of England, which happened on May 12, 1937. OXO Ltd. still makes OXO stock cubes, which contain a concentrated meat extract. The cubes are used to flavour soups, gravy, casseroles and other food recipes to enhance their flavour. The cubes are removed from their foil wrapper then crumbled into the dish and mixed with the ingredients. Chemist Justus von Liebig worked with engineer George Gilbert of Uruguay to produce Liebig’s Extract of Meat, the forerunner of OXO . In the late 1890s, OXO produced a liquid form of the meat extract and in 1899 registered the OXO trademark worldwide, and in 1900 in the UK. In 1910 the OXO 'penny' cube was in production and proved very popular. The money box is significant for its connection to British Monarch, King George IV, who reigned from 1932-1952. It is also significant for its connection to the OXO cube, a very well knon brand of food additive from the mid-19th century to current times.Souvenir money box, oval cylinder with domed, pull-off lid and framed coin slot, with seams on each side. The red tin with gold tin has the Royal Insignia of King George VI and Elizabeth on one side and the Royal medallion-style portrait of King George VI and Elizabeth on the other side. This medal commemorates the coronation of King George VI and Elizabeth as monarchs on the British throne, to be held on May 12th, 1937. The medal is one of over 300,000 distributed to school children as a memento of the occasion. The obverse shows the busts of King George VI and Elizabeth facing left. The reverse shows Victoria's Coat of Arms, the official heraldic symbol, with the Southern Cross on a shield, above it is a kangaroo facing left and holding a crown. The supporting figure on the left holds an olive branch of 'peace' and the supporter on the right holds a cornucopia horn of 'plenty', together representing the text on the ribbon between them 'Peace & Planty' symbol of 'prosperity'. On May 7th, 1937 each school child in Victoria, Australia, received a medal commemorating the upcoming coronation of King George VI and Elizabeth, to be held on May 12th, 1937. medals totalling 318,200 were distributed to scholars in 2,781 Victorian schools. Each school received a letter from the Governor, Lord Humingfield, detailing the significance of the occasion. Lessons on the day focused on the meaning behind the medal, and children recited their Allegiance to the King, saluted the flag bearing the Union Jack and Southern Cross, and sang Australila's then National Anthem "God Save the King", which today is sung as the Royal Anthem. The medal is significant for connecting Victoria, and Australia, to the British Commonwealth and the sovereignty of the British throne, in Australia's post-Federation years. It shows the importance placed by the Government of Australia in educating the generation of students in 1937 about Australia's place in the Commonwealth and the history of Australia. This book is a black and white facsimile of the coloured, commemorate album presented to Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee in June, 1897, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of her reign on the British throne. The Municipalities also received original copies, each numbered as limited editions. The first two pages of the album are an address to Queen Victoria from the Municipalities of the Colony of Victoria, Australia, written in fancy Old English calligraphy. The remaining twenty-three pages display images representing each of the 208 municipalities as in 1897 and include a medallion of their Coat of Arms and statistics such as population, size and valuation, signatures of the Shire Presidents and Secretaries. The album’s publisher, Sands & Mc Dougall Limited, was first established in Sydney. This book was published by the Melbourne Branch.
