The acquisition of land for the purpose of closer settlement was first authorised under the provisions of the Land Act 1898. Article written by Janine JonesRingwood Council will review its hardship provisions for waivering unpaid rates. Mayor Greg Adkins said he was concerned that no ratepayers had their $100 state defecit tax levy waivered due to hardship as part of the latest round of rate changes. This was surprising when there was much hardship in the community. Cr Margaret Cheevers said the loosening of hardship provisions should be widened to apply to those who had difficulty paying their rates. Council's Chief Executive, John Paech , said only a "handful" of ratepayers had applied for hardship provisions -

The Gaol at Portland was in operation as early as 1852. It was reproclaimed in the Government Gazette, along with several other prisons in the colony, in October 1877. In 1892, it was proclaimed a Police Gaol, under the provisions of the Gaols Act 1890. In 1901 after completing her maiden voyage to Australia "Suevic" was used to transport Australian troops to and from the Boer War in South Africa. SUEVIC was requisitioned by the British Government during World War I but maintained its commercial route and was used for bringing provisions and troops from Australia to Europe. SS SUEVIC 1901-1942 White Star Line. SUEVIC and her sister ship RUNIC served as troopships transporting service personnel for duty overseas during WW1Timber framed print of a ship at sea.
