Making trench art was a common way of passing time. Soldiers would use what was available to them. In this case a brass shellMade from brass 25Pdr shell. The has raised clovers and 1914 prominent around a systematically pitted surface. Previous attempts to polish the shell have left these pits white/green in colour. Presented to the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment RAAC by its affiliated regiment the 8th Royal Irish Hussars as part of a gift of regimental property when a reorganisation of British cavalry regiments was being undertaken.Silver rose bowl mounted on black shellacked wooden base. Bowl is oval in plan view and boat-shaped in elevation with human figurines as handles.
