Oil on canvas, 'Creswick and Camp Hill' by Victor Litherland, 1968 /1984
Victor LITHERLAND (16 April 1897 - 1978_ Born Odessa, Russia (of English parents) Born in Odessa, Russia to British parents, Victor Litherland migrated to Australia in 1926 and moved to Creswick in 1932. Victor Litherland, who initially trained as a carpenter and cabinet maker, not only made most of his furniture and clothes but also his painting equipment. Victor Litherland is self taught himself. In 1943 he used books in the Sydney Public Library to teach himself painting, and produced a number of works of the environment in which he lived. Litherland's work has a disregard for perspective, unmodelled faces and cool fresh colours. He often made an elaborate frame for this work. Postcard - Noel Counihan exhibition Moscow 1960 souvenir, Bakery Hill 1854
... Ballarat Reform League Socialism Australian Art Ballarat Russia ...One of a series of postcards from an exhibition of works by Australian Social Realist artists held in Russia in 1960. This postcard is significant to Ballarat as it links to the linocuts Counihan and others produced to commemorate the centenary of the Eureka Stockade in 1954. As this depicts a painting of an event at Ballarat significant in its context to protest for social equality that would be understood by the soviet audience. A link between Australian socialist artists and the Russian political sensibilities of the time.Black and white image of Noel Counihan's painting of Bakery Hill Ballarateureka stockade, ballarat reform league, socialism, australian art, ballarat, russia
