Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. He was a foundation staff member at the Burwood Teachers' College art department when it opened at Box Hill in 1954, transferring to the Burwood Campus in 1955. Upon his retirement he moved to Queensland to start a graphic arts consultancy. Coward was active as a printmaker during the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. John NEELY (1953- ) Born Leavenworth, Kansas, USA John Neely is the Professor of Ceramics at Utah State University. John has studied Ceramics in Japan, and lectured and conducted in workshops, including at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design. He is an expert in the technology of clay, glaze and kiln firing with a keen interest in pattern and texture. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Art at Alfred Univerity, New York in 1975, John Neely participated in a one year Foundation Fellowship at Tokyo, Japan. The following year he was the recipient of a Rockefeller Brothers Fund One Year Fellowship in Tokyo, Japan. Neely completed a Ministry of Education Two Year Postgraduate Research Fellowship at the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts, Kyoto, Japan and was awarded a Master of Fine Art at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio in 1982. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus. Bruce STEWART A Diploma Student in Ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1977 to 1979. Jan Feder is an alumna of Federation University having studied ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University Gippsland campus). Jan Feder was respected by all students for her diligence and technical ability. Her tragic death in 1981 evoked an immediate response from her peers for a memorial. Students discussed a number of memorial options, such as funds for equipment, scholarships and awards. The decision to commence a collection was made based on the idea that all future students could benefit from the availability of a collection, whereas only a very few individuals could benefit from a scholarship. Students immediately set about raising money by selling 'seconds' called 'Junque Sales'. A total of $760.00 was raised and the first two works purchased were by Victor Greenaway and Victoria Howlett. Ceramic works were purchased from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Gippsland Campus. The Artist in Residence Program assisted the collection, with many resident artists contributing to the Collection (ie Robin Welch, Anna Zamorska, Sandy Brown), as well as international guests. Ceramic events such as 'Strzelecki Spotkanie 1984' and 'Woodfire 86' also resulted on major contributions to the collection. Salt-glazed pots. This cruet set is part of a collection donated by Mrs. Jean Raper of Wodonga. It was produced by Harrison Brothers & Howson of Sheffield, England. This company was founded in 1847 by James William Harrison, Henry Harrison and William Howson. The firm, originally at Norfolk Street, Sheffield expanded in the 1880s to the Shoreham Street Works. A new factory was built at Carver Street in 1898. The trademark was taken over by Viners of Sheffield in 1923.
