In 1961 the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee determined that there should be only one approved Ski School in the Tourist Area. The franchise for 1961 was granted to Alpine Developments Pty. Ltd', which also had the franchise for Tow Bar operations. The Ski School headquarters were based at the canteen adjacent to the T-Bar drive station. The Management Committee also determined that "No person shall be permitted to give instruction in skiing for any money or material consideration without the prior approval of the Management Committee". The Alpine Developments franchise was extended for the 1963, 1964 & 1965 seasons. In August 1964, the Committee declared that it was satisfied with the present Ski School operated by Alpine Developments, and is most anxious to retain it at Fells Creek. They declared that they were particularly happy with the standard of teaching and control achieved by the School director, Mr. Siegfried Haberzettl, who was at the resort for his fifth year, and to whose leadership and direction the success of the School was largely due. The Committee therefore arranged to extend the franchise for a further three years after 1965, and thereafter the franchise was to be continuous on twelve months' notice of termination from either party. In the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Ski Instructors were Austrian. Lorna Clarke was one of the first Australians to gain the highest Austrian qualification, the Staatlicher Bundessportheim. She was employed at the Falls Creek Ski School in 1964. In the 1980s there was a push for more Instructor training to take place in Australia to enable local instructors to gain higher qualifications without having to travel to Europe. During this period, George Pirmoser and later Brad Spalding were Ski School Directors and Bridgford was the still the owner of Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. continued to push for training of Australian instructors. Brad Spalding took over as Ski School Director in 1986 and along with his partner, Melissa Landregger developed a wide range of programs including children’s and women’s programs, private lessons and multi-day clinics for which Falls Creek Ski School is renowned until the present.This image is significant because it depicts some of the early instructors at Falls Creek Ski School.A coloured photo of a group of instructors at Falls Creek Ski School. The week was organised by Peter Rickards (Recreation Officer at the Association For The Blind in Melbourne). During the week, the participants were introduced to track skiing and touring without tracks, as well as some aspects of downhill technique. Peter Rickards said that the value of good tracks was clearly demonstrated because although bad weather persisted throughout the week, the tracks cut by the Falls Creek Management Committee had made it possible for the partially-sighted skiers to ski unassisted. Coaching was provided by Peter Beckman, with the able assistance of several physical education students from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Peter Rickards described the week as "most successful" and said plans were being made to make it an annual event. SKI TICKETS Before tows and lifts were introduced at Falls Creek, it could take skiers 20 minutes to climb to the Summit … but only TWO minutes to go back to the bottom. The arrival of tows, then chairlifts and T-bars changed the face of skiing forever. The first rope tow was constructed by Toni St. Elmo for the 1951 winter season. Bob Hymans installed a smaller tow for his guests at Skyline Lodge. Tows were still quite slow, so in 1956 Bob Hymans created his single chairlift. In 1958 the Village rope tow, designed by Albury engineer Jock Wilson, opened. It was financed by shareholders including Bill Griffith (Bowna Ski Club) and the Bridgford family (St. Trinian’s Ski Club). Several other tows followed including the Summit T-bar in 1961, built by Ron McCallum and operated by Alpine Developments Pty. Ltd. which was a company formed by C. H. (Bill) Bridgford. By 1982 Falls Creek was served by 16 different lifts or T-bars, all owned and operated by Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. During the development of Falls Creek, different methods have been used to pay for the use of tows, lifts and T-bars … including metal tokens, single tickets, strips of tickets and season passes. Mavis Grace Lindsay born in 1917 and married Tony St. Elmo in Ballarat on 18 December 1944. She was known as “Skippy” from childhood. They moved from Melbourne in 1945 and spent the year living in Wallace’s Hut. Toni was employed by the State Electricity Commission to record weather-related data. They were to become responsible for early developments at the Falls Creek resort and for promoting a love of skiing. Toni taught Skippy to ski and she practised on the High Plains where she and her husband lived. entering her in the first club championships held by the Bogong Ski Club at Rocky Valley, which he had established. Skippy St Elmo won many ski races during the 1950’s and represented Australia in New Zealand. In 1947, the first ski lodge was built by six SEC employees including Toni St Elmo. The lodge was named “Skyline”. In 1957, Toni was involved in building the first rope tow at Falls Creek, called Nissen. He also established the Nissen Ski School. In 1949, Skippy won the Downhill and Combined State Championship held at Mt Buller. In 1950, Skippy was selected to compete in New Zealand with the Victorian team to compete in New Zealand Skippy trained with the men at the Bogong Ski Club and that fact became a talking point in 1953 when the Albury Ski Club held an Open Championship and Skippy won in giant slalom and downhill. She went on to win many more races. In 1960, Skippy and Toni said farewell to Falls Creek. Skippy passed away in Queensland in July 2005 and Toni passed away in the September of the same year. These boots show an early design of ski boots. The design of boots, materials and closures have changed dramatically as technology has evolved. Early ski boots were little more than lace-up work boots. in 1928, the Swiss ski racer Guido Reuge invented a cable binding designed to hold the heel down for alpine skiing. He named the binding after the Kandahar series of alpine ski races. After World War II, custom bootmakers developed the double boot, with a soft and comfy lace-up inner boot protected and stiffened by a thick bull-hide outer casing laced with heavy-duty corset hooks. A solution towards making boots stiffer and more durable arrived in 1954, when Swiss bike racer and stunt pilot Hans Martin patented the ski boot buckle as shown on this pair of boots. The real revolution in boot design occurred in 1966, when the Canadian ski team were equipped with plastic boots for the Alpine World Championships. Since then manufacturers have competed to further refine designs to meet a range of needs from the weekend skier to elite athletes. The first ski patroller in Falls Creek was Brian Caddy with two casual ski patrollers Rob Sarroff and David Crooke in the 1960s. In 1972 the “official” Falls Creek Ski Patrol was created under the advisement of Dr Rodney Moss with the support of the Management Committee. By 1977 there were six or seven patrollers, and currently there are around 40 patrollers on the team with 13-14 rostered on each day during peak season. In 1974 the Australian Ski Patrol Association (ASPA) was formed. On the 14th March 1975, the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee applied for membership to ASPA. At that time, Falls Creek Ski Patrol was known as Falls Creek Ski Rescue. Bernard Plohberger was one of the early ski instructors at Falls Creek. He was born in Austria on 14 January 1930. He was a ski instructor before he left Austria in 1955. He spent the winter of 1956 working as a ski instructor and during the summer Bernie worked as a chainman for the SEC Surveyor. He built the Ski School at Falls Creek in 1957 as well as the Frying Pan Inn. In 1960 the Frying Pan Inn was taken over by Bill Bridgford who had helped to finance its construction. Bernie married his wife Trudi in 1958 and their son Gerhard was born at the ski school in 1959, the first child born at Falls Creek. Both Trudi and Bernie worked for Bob Hymans for a period at Grand Coeur Chalet. After leaving Falls Creek, Bernie and Trudi moved to Canberra where Bernie took work on civil engineering projects such as the coal loader in Wollongong, the Vietnam memorial in Canberra, highway work on the Hume and Sugarloaf Dam in Victoria. Bernie Plohberger died on 18 May 2020. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. After the April meeting it took Dawn Daddies some time to round up many juniors aged from 2½ to 7½ years old. Page 3 - Fred Griffith was elected President of the Albury Ski Club; Toni and Skippy St. Elmo would be running a cafe at the Nissen Club's Tow House and would also be selling some groceries. Full postal services may also be available; Falls Creek was looking to have a successful season with Bob Hymans providing first class accommodation and instruction, the Bogong Ski Club offering accommodation to other clubs and the Nissen Ski Tow considerable improved and operating again. In 1963 near the town of Sallanches, France two manufacturing companies formed a partnership to create new high-performance skis. The partnership between Starflex skis, produced by Synthetic Plastics, and Dynamic resulted in the production of Dynastar skis. Available Dynastar products has steadily increased since that time to include a wide range of skis, bags, poles, skins and protective garments and equipment.
