Propaganda tract, produced by Bob, 20 September 1918. Perhaps much later in life, it was retracted and dismissed as "All rot!" in a hand-written, blue 'Censor's pencil-note across the typing. A second version suggests that the victims of the booby-trapped body were Belgian soldiers
... Snape Collection..., as not being worthy of himself. Snape Collection ...This little piece of Allied Propaganda was written not long after the death of Bob's much loved brother and comrade. Perhaps it was composed in grief and bitterness, but later regretted and disowned, as not being worthy of himself.snape collection -

POSTCARD 29 December 1915 to MADGE from H.M.A.T. 'DEMOSTHENES' just after embarkation. Secretly married, Bob addresses his wife as 'Miss McLaughlin' c/- her parents. PICTURE POSTCARD of 8th Reinforcements, 6th Field Ambulance, photographed on board the Demosthenes. Every member's name has been carefully recorded by Bob on the reverse side. PHOTOS x 2: Fancy Dress on board Demosthenes. POSTCARD 2 January 1919 to MADGE from Belgium. By this stage, Madge had stopped writing to Bob after she was shown Bob's '2nd Trip to Paris' letter (15 August 1918) by her mother-in-law. By now, Bob had virtually given up on the marriage
... Snape Collection..., Richmond (near West Richmond Railway Station). Snape Collection ...This is one of the very few surviving pieces of correspondence between Bob and his wife, Madge. Bob destroyed the bulk of such correspondence between the pair, although some of Bob's typed letter/stories that Bob sent to Madge survived, pasted into a large hard-backed journal, and later passed on to grand-daughter, Margaret Davey. The Registry Office marriage was a secret business. Perhaps an Irish nationalist, Madge's father, Andrew McLaughlin, had absolutely forbidden any of his daughters to marry a soldier. The Snapes were taken by surprise too and Madge wore the wedding ring on a string about her neck. Bob wrote to Madge McLaughlin c/- her parents's home in at 22 Hull Street, Richmond (near West Richmond Railway Station).Picture Postcard.snape collection -

Captured German Postcard illustrating FRICOURT CHATEAU, in ruins. Bob and Harold worked together in 2nd DIV HQ, in the château's basement for several months, late 1916. Then, on a warm night in August 1918, Harold was mortally wounded (gassed) near here, in Fricourt Woods. The photo of German troops at Fricourt Château was apparently discovered in the château after it was retaken and occupied by the Australian 2nd Division. The German photo of troops armed with their stick grenades was possibly also collected by Bob at Fricourt Château

DIARY & LETTERS, from July 1915 to July 1919. TRANSCRIBED by Walter J R Barber). Bob's diaries and letters are mostly typed. Some letters were hand-written, in ink or pencil, on letter-headed paper. Page1 of Bob's original diary. 3 sample letter-heads
... Snape Collection...This collection of Bob Snape's diary and letters... sample letter-heads. This collection of Bob Snape's diary ...This collection of Bob Snape's diary and letters was transcribed because of the large body of material. 55 numbered letters (out of some 160 plus) survive. Many letters were typed. As a clerk in HQ, Bob had constant access to a type-writer, and sometimes said to his family that typing was much more efficient for him than writing by hand. There are many letters in hand-writing, some in ink , others in pencil. Some letters are on letter-headed paper, eg: YMCA, TSS (HMAT) 'Demosthenes', hotels, family in Wales.snape collection -

THE COOK FAMILY: BOB & HAROLD'S MATERNAL RELATIVES AND THEIR HISTORY as told by cousins, Jeff Miers and Marion ('Bab') Hulme and Bob Snape himself
... Snape Collection... and married Eliza Gardiner............... Snape Collection ...The Cook family was vitally important to the Snape boys who seem to have enjoyed a specially close relationship with Grandfather, 'Charlie Cook the Carpenter' and this largely female branch of the family many of whom lived nearby in Moonee Ponds when the boys were young. Charlie Cook was born at Blackheath in England. He voyaged to the USA to seek his fortune on the Californian goldfields. Hence, he was known as a 'Forty-niner". From California, he sailed to Australia, fetching up in Hobart in 185........... where he met and married Eliza Gardiner...............snape collection -
