John Hitchen was the manager of the first Cheltenham Post Office that opened 1/8/1857 in a boot and shoe store. Mail was transported to and from St Kilda to Cheltenham by coach 6 days a week and an additional service twice weekly to Tootgarook via Frankston also by coach. 1868 Post office Savings Bank began operation and the Telegraph office was established at the Railway Station 1885. A new building was built 1891 in Point Nepean Road for the official Cheltenham Post Office and a new manual telephone exchange began 1899 with 24 subscribers. By 1909 100 subscribers, 1951 there were 1700 and in 1974 12,000 subscribers . Hence this new building was designed by Oscar A. T. Gimsey & Assoc. and built by T W Morris & Sons Mordialloc. Detailed description on the rear of the photograph in ink, particularly about the bus - one of 30 built by Commonwealth Engineering during 1949/50 for the MMTB. Surplus to needs after the conversion of Bourke St and that the seating reduced from 41 to 37 to facilitate one many operation. Black and white photograph of VR tramcar 42 at Elwood Depot in St Kilda St. VR tramcar 42 built at VR Newport Workshops as one of 4 air brake equipped bogie drop centre trams (40-43) and entered service at Elwood Depot in 1923. Operated by VR on the St Kilda to Brighton broad-gauge line until it was scrapped in 1957. Victorian Railways Rail & Tram Monthly Periodical book of tickets with conditions of travel on the inside covers. See reference page 124/125 and Figure 6-35. Book of 60 tickets (No. 49) for Feb. 1922 from North Road to St Kilda. The traveller also had to hold a monthly rail ticket for St Kilda station to Melbourne. The conductor would tear out each ticket and hand half one portion back to the traveller. Has been stamped "cancelled".
