Joan Mary Bray was born 6/9/1915 in Brisbane, the daughter of Herbert Edward Bray and his wife Grace (nee Shepherd) who married in Wisbech, Cambridge in 1892. The family lived at 5 Barton Street from the late 1920s. She completed her primary schooling at Auburn Primary by travelling there by the little black bus along Canterbury Road. She then went on to Mont Albert Central School and Melbourne Girls High. Locally she belonged to the 1st Surrey Hills Girl Guide Company at Holy Trinity Church. She trained as a nurse at Epworth Hospital and in 1941 served with the army at Gaza Hospital in the Middle East, then in New Guinea. From 1944 until the end of the war she was in Bougainville. Her mother died in Surrey Hills 29/9/1945 and her father moved to Hawthorn; he died in 1955. She had 3 older sisters: Eveline Grace (1893-1978) m Eric Benson; Violet Constance (1894-1983 - ? Sister Constance in mother’s death notice); Dorothy Maud (1896 - ? Sister Ursula in mother’s death notice). After the war she was a RSSL nurse, Matron of St Gabriel’s Baby Home in Balwyn, then Director of Nursing at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital, East Melbourne. She resigned to be married. This home-made nightgown was part of Mary Ethel McIntyre (nee Lindsay)'s wedding trousseau. Mary married Robert McIntyre on 29 August 1929 at St Andrews Church, Korumburra. The couple moved to Lang-Lang, then Mentone. The nightgown was donated by Mary's daughter-in-law, Elaine McIntyre (nee Wyatt), who was born and raised in Brighton. She was born in Padua House and attended Brighton Primary School and Hampton High School.Cream short-sleeved nightgown with lace collar and cuffs. Attached fabric sash at waist. St Ann's college history dates back to 1872 with the arrival in Warrnambool of eight Sisters Of Mercy from Ireland. They purchased Wyton House, which was the former home of Mr William Ardlie, soon after their arrival, and the first school was opened that same year. It was initially known as St Mary's and had both day and boarding scholars. When the chapel was built in 1888, the name was changed to St Ann's. It operated as both primary and secondary education until 1974 and in 1991 it amalgamated with nearby St Joseph's CBC and became co-educational operating as Emmanuel College. At that time the uniform changed from the familiar green with yellow to navy blue and maroon. The motto translate as Work conquers all. This blazer belonged to one of the last students to attend both St Ann's College and Emmanuel College and was Vice Captain of Emmanuel College in Year 12. IAn item which would have many local memories and connections with large numbers of children attending the school in close to 150 years of education in Warrnambool.Bottle green woollen school blazer with three green buttons and three pockets . The school monogram is sewn on the top left pocket. It is stitched in yellow with school motto in black. Lighter green stitching in the background. Name tag glued at back.Monogram has St Ann's Warrnambool, Omnia Vincit Labor. Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School - The hall on the left side was the original Our Lady Help of Christians Church which was built c.1962 on the site of the former weatherboard St Mary's Church which was destroyed by fire in 1961. A new church was erected on the opposite (southern) side of Henry Street in 1976, partially on the original Lot 20 Henry Street of Holloway's Little Eltham North estate. Lot 20 Henry Street was the site of the former Wesleyan Church chapel in the 1850s which also used by David and Catherine Clark to establish their first school in 1855 prior to the erection of the Dalton Street school in 1856. The chapel was replaced by a new building, the Eltham Rechabite Hall (1893-1921) which then became the Eltham Public Hall (1922-1940).
