St. Paul's Church: St Paul's Cathedral, Bendigo was built in stages. The nave was built in 1868, the tower in 1872-73 and the transepts and sanctuary in 1926-27. Robert Love was the architect, although the final stage was supervised by architects Gawler and Drummond. Cathedral status was transferred from the original cathedral All Saints to St Paul's in 1981. The Gothic style cathedral is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It has a simple cruciform plan comprising a six bay nave, transepts and sanctuary. A tall tower centrally located at the west end dominates the exterior. The peal of eight bells was cast by Meares and Co of London and installed in 1873. The interior features elaborately cusped roof principals; an organ by Alfred Fuller built in 1883 with a console and pipes added later from St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney; and notable stained glass by Ferguson, Urie and Lyon. St Paul's Rectory was built in 1885 to a design by the architect W C Vahland. The Parish Office and Hall was built as a Sunday School in 1898 to a design by F W Lehmann. Queen's Reserve: Now known as part of the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, Rosalind Park, Pall Mall. In 1851, the gold rush transformed the area and eventually the mullock heaps became the most prominent public park in Bendigo. Rosalind Park was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 2000 for its historic, archaeological, aesthetic, scientific (botanical) and architectural significance to the state of Victoria. The statue of Queen Victoria dates to 1903. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church: Opened in 1859 as part of the Presbyterian Church, St. Andrew's. Union of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches in 1977 saw this church join the Uniting Church. Located in Myers Street, Bendigo. The Orphanage: The Convent of the Good Shepherd, Bendigo was established in 1905. It was established at the request of the Bishop to cater for children in the diocese of Bendigo (although it housed children from other areas as well). It was also known as St Aidan’s Orphanage, and was the only Good Shepherd Convent in Australia to care for boys. The section named St Aidan’s accommodated girls aged up to around 16 years, as well as boys aged up to around 11. Maryfields housed girls and women aged from around 15 years. The Convent ceased to operate as a residential facility for children in 1981. A number of women with disabilities remained at the Convent until it closed in 1984. Conservatory Gardens: Now known as part of the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, Rosalind Park, Pall Mall. And there is always the domestic appeal of the broom which accompanies the curler on ice. Accuracy is the great thing in the game.” Arthur Grenby Outhwaite co-wrote popular “fairy” books, illustrated by his wife, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Mr Arthur Grenby Outhwaite was married to Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, who was regarded as Australia’s greatest children’s book illustrator and they, along with Ida’s sister Annie, collaborated on many books about fairies, elves and koalas. Ida designed four beautiful stained glass windows at St Marks Fitzroy, which are still there. Mrs Lorna Moffatt-Pender née Smith was married to Captain Iain Moffatt-Pender, a former Scottish Rugby Union international player and Seaforth Highlander in WWI, before he emigrated to Australia and became a wealthy sheep farmer. They were both keen curlers and participated in the NZ v Australia bonspiels at Melbourne Glaciarium in 1935. According to The Herald 9/4/1934, Mrs Moffatt-Pender wore fur-lined suede moccasins on the ice and found curling to be "a delightful game for the woman who is not quite as young as she was and wants something livelier than croquet. “There is no reason why women should not play up to 50 years of age. And there is always the domestic appeal of the broom which accompanies the curler on ice. There is a good sprinkling of women among curlers overseas. Accuracy is the great thing in the game.”" The Curling Club of Australia was formed in Melbourne in 1933 with Wimbledon Singles Champion 1907 and 1914, Sir Norman Brookes, the inaugural president. It disbanded in 1939. Curling was invented in Scotland in 1541, where the tradition is that the laird and the crofter are the same on the ice and after bonspiels (curling tournaments) everybody adjourn for a meal of beef and greens. Rocks of granite are sourced from the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig and weigh 20 kg each. Curling is similar to lawn bowls, but on ice. Two teams of four people each take turns to slide granite stones towards a target known as a house. The team with the most rocks closest to the centre of the house, scores points. Curling stones are delivered with a pre-determent rotation so that they curl as they travel – hence “curling”. Opposition teams can throw guards to block the house or take out the opponent’s stone. The sweeping is to gently warm the surface of the ice where the stone will glide, to extend the path of the stone. In 1934, an Australian team which included the Moffatt-Penders, travelled to New Zealand to compete in a bonspiel on frozen Idaburn Dam near Oturehua, Central Otago. New Zealand won. In June 1935, for the Melbourne Centenary, the New Zealand team came to Melbourne to compete for the Silver Fern Trophy. They voyaged on the M.S. Wanganella and the crew nicknamed the curlers the “Ladies Hairdressers”. Australia won two tests and the third test was a draw. At the conclusion of the bonspiel, a secret, centuries old initiation was held at a “curlers’ court” at Anzac House with seven Australian curlers initiated. Afterwards, a dinner was held at the Occidental Hotel (corner of Exhibition and Collins streets, demolished 1950s), where the haggis was carried in under an archway of curling brooms. The “Ode to the Haggis” was recited by “My Lord of the Court”, Captain Moffatt-Pender before he presented each New Zealand team member with a miniature curling stone as a souvenir of their visit. The Melbourne Glaciarium (also known as "The Glaci" or "The Glassy") opened in 1906 at 16 City Road, South Melbourne and was the third largest ice rink in the world at the time. There was seating for 2000 people which was heated with hot water pipes, and they could hire out 1500 pairs of skates. Up to 5000 people could attend hockey matches and ice sports carnivals at any one time. Patrons could watch films in summer or dance to the Glaciarium’s own orchestra conducted by Frank Bladen, who had played with the Pavlova and the Gilbert and Sullivan orchestras. In 1911 John Sousa, creator of the Sousaphone, and his band played a season of concerts. In 1924, the Glaciarium was turned into a makeshift film studio for filming of the interior scenes of "Jewelled Nights", starring Australian actress Louise Lovely, who had achieved success in Hollywood. The basketball and gymnastic competitions for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games were held there. Public skating sessions always finished with “Till we Meet Again”, a popular WWI song about the parting of a soldier and his sweetheart, written by Richard A Whiting and Raymond B Egan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank.These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026. These pictures were captured after the stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled and put into storage. The west window of Wesley Church, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, he regarded as his most significant design. ...William (Jock) Frater (1890-1974) was an an artist and stained-glass designer who had some associations with Eltham. Frater was born in 1890 in Linlithglow Scotland. In 1910 he arrived in Melbourne. With a passion for painting, he hadn’t been in Melbourne very long before he met Percy Leason and Richard McGann, who were both working as lithographers with Sands and McDougall who produced Melbourne Directories. Jock Frater asked them where, near Melbourne, he should go to paint, and they both replied ‘Eltham’. Frater and Percy Leason became firm friends; and with others they spent their weekends painting, at Eltham and other places. Many times, during those weekends Frater and Leason would camp the night near Bible and Pitt streets. Another favourite spot for their weekend sketching was along the Diamond Creek where Judge Book Memorial Village was later built. In 1916 Jock Frater married his wife Winifred Dow, a tailoress. They bought a house and small property on the corner of Arthur and Bible streets. They lived in Eltham for about a year, then moved to Alphington. Jock also became a stained-glass designer. The west window of Wesley Church, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, he regarded as his most significant design. His contribution to art in Australia was, however, as a painter who introduced Post-Impressionist principles and challenged the notion that art was an imitation of nature. He visited Central Australia in 1950 and Port Douglas, North Queensland, in 1952. His later major exhibitions were at the Australian Galleries, Melbourne, in 1958, the Victorian Artists’ Society in 1963, and a retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1966. Frater was a revered president of the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1963 until 1972, exhibiting annually with the society during the last decade of his career and filling three galleries at his final exhibition in July 1973. In 1974 Frater was appointed O.B.E. for his services to art. His work is represented in galleries and private collections throughout Australia as well as the Glasgow Art Gallery. He died at his home at Alphington on 28 November 1974 and was buried in Arthurs Creek cemetery. He was survived by four sons and a daughter. In the 1940s College Church was internally re-ordered and this work was designed ...The College Church congregation initially worshipped in Ormond College in 1891. In 1895 they purchased the site of the present building. A committee set out certain specifications (including the crown tower), and a competition for the best design was won by architect RA Lawson. The building, constructed by Lang Brothers of Parkville at a cost of 2,170 pounds, was opened in 1898. College Church remained the only parish church in Parkville until 1934. The outstanding element is the crown tower, a choice of the first minister, the Reverend Alexander Yule. It is a copy, albeit on a reduced scale, of King's College Chapel, Aberdeen University, of which Reverend Yule was a former student. This crown tower is the only example in Victoria and is possibly unique in Australia. The church is constructed of red brick and Oamaru sandstone with a steeply pitched slate roof and parapeted gables. Windows are in the Gothic pointed arch style. The interior of the Church has a fine timber ceiling with arch braces. There are a number of quality stained glass windows, the two largest being dedicated to Mungo Scott and his wife, Scott having been a benefactor of the Church. In the 1940s College Church was internally re-ordered and this work was designed by prominent church architect, Louis Williams. The church became part of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977, and ownership subsequently passed to Mar Thoma Syrian Church in 2008. From The Argus, Friday 19 April 1907: Rev. Alexander Yule washeld in highest esteem in his ministerialbrethren and a large circle of friends was abundanrly evident by the expressions ofsorrowful regret at his death and of sympathy with his widow and her three sonsby those who attended the funeral servicesyesterday morning. To most of those present the announcement of Mr. Yule's death, made in "The Argus" on Wednesday, came as a painful surprise. It was known that at the time of his ministerial jubilee last January he shown symptoms of failing health, and that his illness had gradually become more serious, but few among the intimate friends of the family thought the end was so near. Although Mr. Yule suffered much physical weakness, his mental faculties were unimpaired, and he was able to carry on his ministerial work almost to the last. He even conducted the services at the College Church, Parkville, on Sunday, March 31. Testimony is borne that his ministry was appreciated most highly by the important congregations, both in Scotland and Victoria, under his charge; that in the church courts he was a safe and wise counsellor; and that he did excellent service on various committees, and as the convenor of the Theological-hall committee, on which he was appointed by the General Assembly. The esteem in which he was regarded by the Presbyterian Church as a whole was expressed in his election in 1891 to the Moderator's chair of the Victorian Church, and to that of the Federal Assembly in 1901. The funeral service was held at College Church, the scene of Mr. Yule's ministry since 1891. The building was filled to overflowing by a congregation that included most of the members of the metropolitan presbyteries, representatives from several of the provincial presbyterues, the students of the Theological-hall, members of the Parkville congregation, and the children of Miss Sutherland's Home. The pulpit and furniture were draped in black, and the plain oak coffin rested on the communion-table. The simple yet impressive service usual with the Presbyterian Church was conducted by Professor Rentoul, president of the Theological-hall Senatus, who was assisted by Professor Skene, Rev. W. Fraser (moderator of the Melbourne North Presbytery), Rev. D. S. McEacharn, and the Rev. John Thomson, a life-long friend of the departed minister. The Dead March in "Saul" was played on the organ as the coffin was borne to the hearse. Most of the subdivision plans date from the 1920s and 1930s when the districts old homes and local farmland were being split up to accommodate residential growth in the postwar period. These early plans were assembled by a local firm, Jas R Mather & McMillan, which had an office in Cotham Road. Many of the plans, and sometimes photos, were annotated by the agents.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence for the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.The photograph may also be aesthetically significant depending on the importance of the photographic atelier.An elevated, modest weatherboard house, photographed towards the end of the construction phase. The other buildings are the bishop's residence, vicarage and parish hall. It is built from rarely used undressed random coursed sandstone from Point King Sorrento. It is located at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda. The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. His younger brother William died in the wreck of the ‘British Admiral’ off King Island on 23 May 1874. The images show the condition of the church at the time they were taken (c 2012). Signs of deterioration can be seen. The window was designed by the Fisher Company, and was unveiled on 14 March 1920 at a total cost of 171 pounds 10 shillings. The windows are considered to be one of the most remarkable war memorial windows in Victoria, and the 1800s English Gothic-style front facade is believed to be protected by a City of Ballarat heritage overlay. Historical experts believe the windows were designed by renowned stained-glass window-maker William Montgomery. The centre window depicts a young soldier bearing an Anzac badge underneath the British and Australian flags. The image of the solider is surrounded by 24 crosses, a single dove and a bugle. Designed by Benjamin Backhouse of Geelong, the foundation stone was laid on 27 March 1860 by Mrs Celia Scott of Mount Boninyong, the oldest resident in the district. The cost of the building was £900 and when fitted out the cost was £1,265. The first service in the new church was held on 26 August 1860, and a bell founded by Greeves of London in 1849 was hung in the steeple. (Possibly this bell came from the old church on the hill.) The local builder Richard Rennie built the church of brick and slate. In the 1950s the brick was covered with roughcast and plaster. The church boasts some fine stained glass windows.
