One of a batch of yarn sample cards. Alexander Lau established his business in 1950 in the Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston Street, Melbourne. He designed textiles and commissionned many of his textiles to be spun andf woven in Geelong mills. He had a long association with the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Mill and with Mr Schofield, the manager. In 2000, he retired and closed the business.Yarn sample card: card wound with four samples of woollen yarn, each yarn sample is the same design but in a different colourway. Textiles. Woven thread design, edged with a 2.5 cm fringe. A deep coffee coloured linen, with a woven deign in the centre 8 cm square, surrounded with a 2 cm wide border, woven in a different texture. Textiles. Possibly Brussells linen lace. Oval in shape, very fine net is overlaid with a floral design of linen lace. A spray of 16 x 1.5 cm diameter flowers, and 1.0 cm leaves are attached. Textiles, black velvet tea cosy.Embroidered in velour thread. Floral design. One side has three stems of pink dahlia like flowers and leaves. The other side has three stems of yellow flowers with leaves. The tea cosy is edged with 7 cm red and yellow striped cord. Textiles. Calico flour bag printed on one side in red "GRIMSBY ROLLER FLOUR MILLS, STEWART SCOTT & CO CRYSTALS, BENDIGO''. In centre is a crown. Remnants of black cotton stitching along top opening. The two-story section of this mill was built in about 1873 with grinding stones. In 1887 the owners Stewart and Scott purchased new roller machinery and built a four-storey building to house it. A rug designed to celebrate the exhibition of Egyptian art 'Life & Death Under the Pharaohs' from 'The National Museum of Antiquities' in Leiden, The Netherlands. It was made onsite at the National Wool Museum on the 1910 Axeminister loom. Paula DO PRADO Born Montevide, Uruguay Arrived Australia September 1986 Paula Do Prado holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Textiles) with First Class Honours and a Master of Fine Arts from Art & Design at the University of New South Wales.Her works are compelling, multi-layered and rich with cultural references surrounding concepts of identity, race and gender. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. The textiles in the Haeusler collection belonged to Ilma Margaret Ernestine Haeusler (née Tasker), born in 1900 in Tallangatta. These textiles were handmade by Ilma between 1919 and 1928 for use in the family home during her marriage to Louis Alfred Haeusler (b.1878). Ilma died in childbirth in 1928, leaving one surviving son, John Alfred Lyell (b.1922). This textile is one of the many domestic objects in the Haeusler Collection that represent family and home life in early twentieth century Wodonga. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century prior to the mass production of clothing and textiles, needlework, alongside motherhood, was the defining work of women. Hand sewing and embroidery was central in the everyday lives and domestic roles of women. The item is handmade and unique, with well documented provenance. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga.
