Northern District School of Nursing nurse's base uniform 1950s - 70s.Blue cotton uniform worn beneath white apron. The uniform is open at the front with eight button holes in right placket for buttons and shanks to attach. There are corresponding buttonholes on left side for closing, a small pocket at top left and a pocket at RHS of skirt. There is a small buttonhole at back of neck to attach white collar and white cuffs are attached to sleeves with two white buttons. The front has gathering from below the shoulders and the back top has an inverted pleat at centre. There is a white belt with two white buttons at one end attached with shanks and three sets of two button holes at the other end for closing. There is a white cap with frill and a line of blue braid above the frill indicating a third year trainee. There is a white apron with four buttonholes at the waist for closing and for the two shoulder straps.A white tag with Joy Lewis' in red is attached to all items. N.T.S in black marking pen is printed on back hem of neck. Two white caps with blue stripe above frill denotes 3rd year nurse. One white cap with brown stripe above frill denotes third year after uniform changed in July 1974.Brown stripe cap has 'Leung BBH' on central mitre in black marking pen. One blue stripe cap has 'Kelly" ? and 'NTI along central mitre. A second blue stripe cap has 'Freeman' in black marking pen on LHS mitre. One white frill cap has 'M.S.Anderson", a second white frill cap had 'N.T.' in marking pen and a button affixed to the central mitre. A third white frill cap has an embroidered name strip with 'K. Woodman in blue and 'B.B.H.' in black marking pen on the central mitre. One plain white cap has jumbled marking pen lettering 'NT 2NT3 NT3 on bottom RHS and a buttonhole to top of each mitre. Alfred student nurses always wore arm bands to identify their level of seniority. This specific style was used from 1950-1992.New nurses in preliminary training school had no arm badge and a red pattee cross on their hats. The 'signed on' first year student exchanged the hat with a red pattee cross for a hat with the hospital badge shown in the picture and wore the arm badge of the white pattee cross on a light blue square; the second year nurse wore a red skeletal cross on a white square and the third year nurse a filled in red cross on a white square. Prior to the 1950s the nurses from 1880 were identified by only two arm patches, a red skeletal cross and a filled in red cross which were on arm bands and were worn above the elbow on the left sleeve.
