Cowes Post Office built in 1909 with handmade bricks which were first used in the building of first Chicory Kiln in Cowes on Phillip Island in 1870 by the West brothers, Solomon and John. The site on the corner of Thompson Avenue and Church Street, Cowes was reserved on the 12th April 1869 and the church was erected by the end of the year. Financed by the Island Church of England people. Dean McCartney preached the first sermon and performed the dedication service on 30th January 1870. Prior to this time services were held at the McHaffie homestead, Ventnor. Mrs S D (Georgianna) McHaffie, wife of the first European settlers, wrote in her diary "30th January 1870. Drove to Cowes, opened the Church, fine day". the large Bible presented by her is on loan and displayed in the Museum of the Phillip Island & District Historical Society.The timber Anglican Church of St Philips was built by Alex McLardy Sen. in 1869. It is still situated in Thompson Avenue on the corner of Church Street. The Vestry was added by Mr Alex McLardy in 1903 at the cost of 21 pounds. Built as a home for Mrs Jessie Smith - it was later used as a billiard room and finally as the Penguin Cafe. Mrs Smith was a member of the 'Small' Family of San Remo. She was the only Estate Agent in Cowes until 1954. Mrs Smith was in her late nineties when she died in 1977.The Penguin Cafe was built as a home for Mrs Jessie Smith. This was Arnie Brown's house in the main street of Cowes. Arnie lived at Hastings, but came to live on Phillip Island in 1908. One of the best known boatman - he provided fishing trips for visitors. He died in the autumn of 1952 from an accident when tying up at Cowes Jetty. He had numerous fishing boats.Old house in Thompson Avenue, Cowes. The chairs together with a large table originally were used by the Phillip Island Council for monthly shire meetings in the old shire hall in Thompson Avenue. When the new offices opened on the corner of Church Street & Thompson Avenue in 1978 modern furniture was installed. They were then donated to the Historical Society.
