The group on the left is of one woman standing and two women seated, one reading a newspaper or magazine. The young child reaches out one arm to her, perhaps for reassurance. The dwelling consists of two structures, one single storeyed cottage, which is perhaps the older part, and an adjoining weatherboard house with a steeply pitched roof and a prominent chimney at the front. The cottage has a shingled verandah partially covered by corrugated iron, which also covers the roof. Trees, a climbing vine and shrubs form a rather unkempt garden. They operate by pressurizing paraffin (kerosene) and using a mantle that glows when heated. These lamps were particularly popular in rural Australia, where they were essential for farm work, shearing sheds, and outback travel.This is a vintage Tilley paraffin (kerosene) pressure lamp, designed for portable lighting. The lamp consists of a brass fuel tank (base), a glass globe, a burner assembly, and a protective wire frame. The glass globe is clear and houses the burner and mantle. It marked the transition of the company that had initially been directed by Lance Nicholls to one directed by Beatrice Oakley. The Maid of the Mountains, called in its original score a musical play, is an operetta or musical comedy in three acts. The music was by Harold Fraser-Simson, with additional music by James W. Tate, lyrics by Harry Graham and additional lyrics by Frank Clifford Harris and Valentine. For the Kew production, the scenery was executed by James L. Alexander and the wardrobe supplied by J.C. Williamson.
