This is the Eighth Reader in the series of school readers introduced in 1928 for the Education Department of Victoria and used extensively in Victorian schools in the early to mid 20th century decades. This copy was in use as a Form Two (Year 8) class set at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s .This book is of general interest, being the final book in the series of school readers that were in widespread use in Victorian schools from the late 1920s to the 1950s. The book is also of interest because it was used at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s and has the signatures of nine pupils who used the book at that time. St. Ann’s College, the Catholic secondary school for girls in Warrnambool in the 1970s, is now incorporated into the co-educational Catholic secondary school in Warrnambool – Emmanuel College. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. It has a Contents page, an Acknowledgments page, reading material of prose and verse, including extracts from books of well-known authors and Notes and Explanations at the back of the book. The cover is brown with the emblem of the Education Department of Victoria on the front and the book is missing its spine covering. The book has many black and white photographs and sketches. This book is a sixth grade reader which all Victorian students would have read during the 1940's. The book is made up of poems and stories, some which are still known and told today. Some pages have drawings that relate to the story of poems. This is historically significant due to showing what children read during the 1940's in schools across Victoria. Also it is a good comparison to what grade six children read now. Therefore it has good interpretation value and would be good in local school exhibitions. The names on the book indicate that this book came from a local famil, the Johnson and was read to two children of that family which gives this good social history. Some of the pages have had their pictured colored in by the student and words that have been underlined. These could have been harder words for the students to learn and seem advanced for grade six children to read. Inside cover has the names, Lorraine Margaret Johnson, Allan Johnson and Alice Payork? but that name has been crossed out and John with the son crossed out. This book was supplied by the Victorian Education Department for all Grade 5 students at Government schools. Each student had one including the local family who passed it on to another family member. Books were covered to protect them. In this case a stiff, dull plastic.Historical: Used by grade 5 students in Victorian Government Schools. Provenance: Used and handed down to family members in Tawonga where they lived and went to school.Pale coloured pinkish plastic with white landscape picture in white on it covers the hard covered book. The Victorian Education Department published and printed this reader in 1937. The infant grades learnt to read using phonics which included word groups eg. 'ee' words, 'ai' words etc.This book was used in all Victorian schools to assist children to read.Small tattered book with soft cover held by cloth on card. The 102 pages are held by two staples. It consists of stories, poetry with B & W pictures some of which have been coloured in with pencil. At the back is a 'Language List' which consists of 'word groups' eg.
