He worked for him as bricklayer's assistant in building, among others, the Anglican and Methodist Churches in Eltham. In 1862 he purchased land in the east end of Pitt Street bounded by Eucalyptus Road and Wattle Grove and established a mixed farm and orchard. He refined his machines making them ...A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled 'The Bendigo Fuse Factory by Amy Huxtable.' In 1860 Mr. Charles Perry set up as Proprietor of stamper grating works and was later joined by his nephew Mr. W. Hunter. During this time Mr. Perry worked on a model machine for constructing safer fuses. In 1876 Mr. Charles Perry built a fuse factory in Wattle Street. He refined his machines making them larger and very suitable for building safer fuses. In 1888 the English firm of fuse manufacturers Bickford, Smith & Co., purchased the factory and the secret of the manufacture. In 1912 the Wattle Street building was purchased by Tony Patterson and Huon Matear and was known as the Economic Manufacturing Co. (Bendigo White Works) making underwear. This was followed by Crestknit Industries which ceased operation in 1977. Perry designed and patented a safety fuse that he ...Charles Perry was born in Cornwall in 1832 and came to Victoria when he was 25. He and John Hunter established a fuse factory in Wattle Street. Perry designed and patented a safety fuse that he was then able to put into production in 1875. In 1889 the business was sold to Bickford Smith and Co., English fuse manufacturers, who continued to manufacture fuses until 1912. Perry was active in community affairs and served as a councillor for the Sutton Ward in 1902. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area in and surrounding Marysville and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Busy: the Frank Brown Brick factory, Back Creek, circa 1900. Frank M. Brown was born in 1857. He began his working life as an apprentice pattern maker with A. Roberts & Sons, iron founders, in Wills Street, Sandhurst. He later became foreman of Horwoods Foundry in Vine Street. He formed a foundry partnership with Thomas R.J. Carter in 1887 as Carter & Brown. In 1889 he left Carter to start his own City foundry in Wattle Street. In 1892 Brown established a steam brick works opposite 208 Sheepwash Road (now Sternberg Street) which continued to operate until about 1916.
