This is a transcription by Sandra Dexter of the original WW1 diary which was donated to ANZAC House by John Howden, F.W. Mawson's nephew. Sandra augmented the words in the diary with additional material including photos to give context to the people, places and events referred to in Frederick Mawson's words. Published with Surrey Hills Historical Society funds with permission of Anzac House librarian, Fred Pratt. This honour roll was found in poor condition in a district antique shop. It was fully restored by an enthusiastic local lady, It was presented to the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum on 20 April 2022. The Museum is now known as the Bendigo Military Museum. "MM" Military Medal "DSO" Distinguished Service Order The frame is a flat faced hardwood timber, varnished. Each corner has a decorative scroll work of leaves and flowers. They are dark brown colour. There is a gold rim around the inside of the picture frame. Inside are 15 oval openings, in which are black and white portraits of WW1 soldiers. The writing and captions are in white paint. This head-wear was Introduced by Lieutenant colonel William Malone whilst in command of a New Zealand Territorial unit (Taranaki Rifles) just prior to World War 1. The hat's crown was said to mirror the outline of Mount Taranaki. The hat was formerly adopted by the New Zealand army in France in early 1916 and is commonly referred to as the 'Lemon Squeezer'. It is still in use for ceremonial purposes. Note: Lieutenant colonel Malone was killed in action on Gallipoli in 1915 during the battle of Chunuk Bair. Francis was known as Joseph and his name is on the Cowes war memorial. The Dominick family had 40 acres on the Nobbies Road, next to the Smiths. He enlisted in South Melbourne on 27/10/1916 and was killed in action on 4 October 1917 in Belgium.Historical2 photocopied WW1 documents. Pte Simmons was born in Kyneton. Died at the battle of Fromelles, July 1916.Fromelles. The battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 was a bloody initiation for Australian soldiers to warfare on the Western Front. Soldiers of the newly arrived 5th Australian Division, together with the British 61st Division, were ordered to attack strongly fortified German front line positions near the Aubers Ridge in French Flanders. The attack was intended as a feint to hold German reserves from moving south to the Somme where a large Allied offensive had begun on 1 July. The feint was a disastrous failure. Australian and British soldiers assaulted over open ground in broad daylight and under direct observation and heavy fire from the German lines. Over 5,500 Australians became casualties. Almost 2,000 of them were killed in action or died of wounds and some 400 were captured. This is believed to be the greatest loss by a single division in 24 hours during the entire First World War. Described as 71.5inches tall, medium complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
