Book, Burwood Boys: Seven stories of success, 2018
The seven stories in this book are told by former residents of Burwood Boys' Home, some of whom arrived there from other residential institutions. The stories provide a window into an earlier era of Melbourne's social history, from the 1930's to the 1970's. These are stories of resilience, good humour and positivity, but also of abandonment, confusion and fear as families made hard decisions. They vary in length, and include one longer extract from an autobiographical work by Hector Davis OAM, who arrived at Burwood, aged eight in 1934.A5, 154 pages; black & white photos and some coloured photosnon-fictionThe seven stories in this book are told by former residents of Burwood Boys' Home, some of whom arrived there from other residential institutions. Photograph - Historic re-enactment during the Festival of Kew, 1978
At the 1978 Festival of Kew, a number of organisations, including the City of Kew, the Kew Historical Society, Trinity Boys Grammar School and local Girl Guides participated in a re-enactment of the expedition of the party of Charles Grimes in surveying the Yarra River as far as Kew in February 1803. The location for the event was Yarra Bend Park near the Studley Park Boat House. The event was organised by the Kew Historical Society. The re-enactment was captured by a number of amateur photographers as well as by a photographer from the local Progress Press.Local communities select events to commemorate according to their shared history and values. Commemorations of colonial exploration were popular with local historical groups such as the Kew Historical Society in the twentieth century. In re-enacting events such as the Grimes survey of the Yarra, students from a local school were encouraged to take on specific roles, including play-acting individuals involved in the survey party as well as members of the local Wurundjeri People. The photographs, taken by amateur and professional photographers, represent a period in time when the dominant values were those shared by the descendants of European settlers in Victoria. Original colour photographic positive showing six boys from Trinity Grammar School in a boat on the Yarra at Studley Park in a re-enactment of the survey party of Charles Grimes of February 1803.Annotated on reverse: "GRIMES PARTY COMING UP THE YARRA 1978 / TRINITY GRAMMAR BOYS IN RE-ENACTMENT / FESTIVAL CONTRIBUTION / BY KEW HISTORICAL SOCIETY"kew historical society, trinity grammar school, kew girl guides, city of kew, yarra river, charles grimes, collins expedition, wurundjeri people, yarra bend park, colonial surveys, historic re-enactments, festival of kew, kew festival -

Photograph, Somers Camp, c1930
A black and white photo of six boys on a beach. The labels identify Jack Suggett and Norm Smith. Likely to be a very early camp for junior legatees at Somers. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Legatee Savige was the key founder of Legacy in 1923. This photo was with other photos from the early days of Legacy, including cricket team, football team, and camps at Balnarring/Somers.Legatee Savige's property at Balnarring became very important for Legacy providing outings and camps for junior legatees.Black and white photo x 2 of boys in swimwear on a beach.Handwritten on group of 6 boys says 'L R. + Jack Suggett + + + Norm Smith' in blue pen. Both have stamped '4 28' on back in grey ink, implying they were printed at the same time.
