The foundation stone of the New Wesleyan Church, Were Street, Brighton, Victoria was laid by Mrs W P Wells, the wife of the Superintendent of the Brighton Circuit and President of the Victorian Wesleyan Conference in 1887. The foundation stone was temporarily removed in the late 1930s and the 1937 publication "Were Street Jubilee" details the "proposed Jubilee Church". The same trowel was used when the stone was re-laid in 1955 at the beginning of the construction on the new church. S060.1 Silver commemorative trowel with a bone handle. Keith Pither was born at Shepparton in 1914 and grew up on a farm. Attended Otira Methodist Home Mission Training College from 1936 and by 1939 was a probation minister at Burnie (Tas.). Enlisted in the army 1939 and served in the Middle East and Northern Australia. In 1943 he was ordained in the field as a chaplain and later served in New Guinea. Married Allison (Alison?) Brown in 1945 and they had four children, Brian, Rhonda, Andrew and Howard. Completed his studies at Melbourne University 1946. Placements were Red Cliffs, Carlton Methodist Mission, Benalla, Portland, Sandringham and Ivanhoe. Died 19/6/2008.The Pithers are holding a knife about to cut an anniversary cake."Rev. K. M. Benjamin Danks was b. 1853 England, ordained 1878, and died 1921 in Rookwood, NSW. DANKS, Benjamin (1853-1921) Michael Horsburgh, DANKS, BENJAMIN (b. Wednesbury, England, 12 Feb 1853; d. Sydney, NSW, 12 April 1921). Methodist missionary in New Britain and missionary administrator. Benjamin Danks migrated to Vic with his family when a young child. He entered the Wesleyan Methodist ministry in 1878 and was sent with his wife, Emma, daughter of John and Elizabeth Watsford, to join the Rev George Brown in the newly established missionary venture on the Duke of York group in New Britain, where he remained for nine years. An opponent of 'blackbirding', the traffic in indentured island labour for the Australian sugar cane industry, he warned local inhabitants not to go aboard any vessel recruiting labour for distant places, much to the displeasure of the labour traders. In 1880 he participated in the rescue of the survivors of the ill-fated settlement established by the Marquis de Rays. In 1907 he succeeded George Brown as the general secretary of Foreign Missions for the Methodist Church of Australasia and was president of the NSW Conference in 1908. He retired in 1918 and died in 1921 after a long illness attributed to the privations of his missionary career. Danks was highly regarded as a linguist and published the first book in the Tolai language of New Britain. He was a strong supporter of state legislation to control social evils, and to ensure pure food and drugs. He was an ardent temperance advocate. The Ball Court Hotel was built in the late 1870's by John Cahill. It remained with the Cahill family until World War 2. The Lupson family were the hoteliers for 20 years after WW2 and in 1973 the McPhersons rebuilt the interior and added air conditioning to the building. The Ball Court Hotel is the only surviving hotel from Sunbury's early settlement.A coloured photograph of the side view along Macedon Street of the Ball Court Hotel showing the public bar in the original building, the Take-away area and the bistro. There are three windows and a door in the original building. The take-away section has a shop front facade and the bistro entrance has two double glass doors. All doorways are covered with a cantilever brown and white canvas awning. Ann Holden married George Evans at the age of 16 in 1843. She lived at Emu Bottom and died in 1893 at the age of 67. Made by Mrs Sayer in 1980 at Deniliqiun TAFE "Garment Assembly" course which was 2 years long. A popular course which was common in those days, Mrs Sayer was always crafty but not good at the other subjects. She wore this hat with the full ensemble also containing a dress and wool coat from 1980 - 2014.Small brim women's sunhat. Sandy brown in colour. Floral ribbon tied around the hat just on top of the brim which is secured with a green pin on right side of hat. On the front there is a small gold ANZAC badge that reads "Lest We Forget". On the left hand side there is a brown brooch with feathers attached, and the back of the hat features another brooch, which is round in shape and features 6 jewels with one large jewel in the middle. The coat along with matching hat and dress ensemble was made in 1980 at the Deniliquin TAFE 'Garment Assembly' course which was 2 years in duration. Mrs Sayer was always crafty but not great at other subjects. Coat is lined with a petticoat which Mrs Sayer wore in 1958. The seal fur collar was purchased by Mrs Sayer's mother at the shop 'Manly Corso' in Sydney, after WW1 with money from her father.Light brown wool coat with seal fur collar attached. The samples were given to Mr Robert Anderson, an apprentice fitter and turner at the mill between 1960-1965. His mother, Mrs Lucy Anderson, sewed the samples into quilts in the early 1960s. This is one quilt of three.A quilt made from woven samples of woollen fabric with herringbone and checked designs, mostly in brown, green, blue and red. The samples are machine sewn together. The Geelong Handweavers and Spinners Guild Inc. entered "The Afternoon Tea Party" , designed by Val Ingeme, into the "Five Articles" Section of the Melbourne Sheep and Woolcraft Show c.1992. To qualify, the entry needed to be from a group of five people and be able to demonstrate a number of wool crafts in at least five different items. "The Afternoon Tea Party" was loaned to the NWM for display and was subsequently donated in 2003.
