This recipe book was produced about the 1970s to raise funds for the Merrivale Football Club, an Australian Football club (the Tigers) from Merrivale, a suburb of Warrnambool. It is in the Warrnambool and District Football League, being one of the four founding clubs in 1946, and winning premierships in 1958, 1979, 1991, 1996 and 2003. The recipe book is of some interest as it demonstrates the way sporting clubs raised funds in the 1970s and the recipes themselves show the types of meals and food that were popular at that time. This is an in-house publication by the Merrivale Football Club Social Club with recipes (about 60 pages) typed in pink, buff, lemon, green, blue and Old Gold coloured paper. The New South Wales Railway Institute affectionately known as “the Institute”, was initially established to provide a higher standard of educational learning for NSW railway employees. As well as employment related training, the Institute was tasked with stimulating growth and intellectual development of employees in the arts, social, leisure, and physical recreations. The NSW Railway Institute was formally opened on the 14th of March 1891 and at the time was the only institution of its kind in the Commonwealth. The Albury branch of the Railways Institute was formed on March 1, 1921. This included the building of a Railway Institute building as part of the Railway precinct in 1921. On Tuesday 7 October 1952, the Daily Advertiser, Wagga reported that a move had started at Albury for the establishment of a third bowling club. The new club formed would be the Railway Institute Bowling Club and the suggested site was on Albury City Council land at the corner of Young and Smollett streets. The Albury Railway Institute opened its bowling greens in February 1956. It later became known as Windsor Park Bowling Club. In 2003, the Bowling Club was liquidated and was amalgamated with the Albury Soldiers Sailors & Airmen’s Club. After changes to their operating model, the club building was demolished in 2013. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. Orbost Aero Club began in 1969 with Basil Dowie as Chair, David Nixon as Secretary/Treasurer. The group went into recess from 1977-1991 closing in 1997. The mid 1960s were boom years in flying training in Australia and the number of Aero Clubs grew rapidly. Wodonga Football Club’s first recorded match was against the Albury Football Club on Saturday, 6 July 1878 in Wodonga. Between 1878 and 1891, Wodonga played many intermittent friendly matches against other local clubs and towns, before organised fixtures and competitions were starting to be arranged from the early 1890s In 1899, the Wodonga Football Club "Starlights" Junior Club was formed and adopted the Club colours of blue, black and a white star. In 1903, 1904 and 1905, the Wodonga Football Club "Shamrocks" entered a team in the local Federal Junior Football Association. In April 1906, the Wodonga Football Club "Shamrocks" met and decided to become a Senior team and be known as just the Wodonga FC The Club, currently a member of the Ovens and Murray Football League, has participated in a variety of local leagues and competition since then, apart from the years of the First and Second World Wars when they went into recess. The support the club has shown to its members was evidenced around 1949, when the Wodonga FC set up a Provident Fund for injured players to be compensated if they were not able to work for a length of time. In 1981, Wodonga achieved the rare feat of winning football Premierships in the Firsts, Seconds and Thirds. No other team has done this. The club has played in the finals 33 of the 74 years, winning seven senior premiership flags. Wodonga Football Club was first established in 1878 and has played an important role in the community since that time. It has been successful not only on the sporting field, but has provided support and social connection to its members and their families.
